Connacht FBD League: Wins for Galway, Mayo and IT Sligo

January 18, 2010
Joe Kernan's first game in charge of Galway in 2010 yielded a 0-11 to 0-5 victory over Sligo at Tuam Stadium yesterday. Having overseen the FBD League final win over New York before Christmas, Kernan made it two wins from two with Nicky Joyce's tally of 0-7 inspiring this latest triumph. However, the big talking point afterwards was the awarding of a massive 74 frees by Mayo referee Michael Daly. In Garrymore, the diminutive Mark Ronaldson scored 0-7 to help Mayo to a 0-11 to 0-9 victory over NUIG. Newcomer Alan Feeney impressed at full back for the winners, who had dual star Keith Higgins sent off on a second yellow card in the closing stages. Galway's Sean Armstrong also notched 0-7 for the students. Michael Breslin's IT Sligo side got the better of Roscommon by 1-7 to 1-6 at Ballinode. The sides conceded early penalties with Senan Kilbride and Stephen Coen netting for Roscommon and IT Slgio respectively. The students led by 1-3 to 1-2 at the break and after Ger Heneghan levelled from a free in the 57th minute, Alan Freeman kicked the winning point for the home side. A Jonathan Ryan point three minutes from the end earned GMIT a 0-14 to 1-11 draw with Leitrim at Cloone. A fortuitous Philip McGuinness goal had Mickey Moran's side ahead by 1-5 to 0-2 after 17 minutes, but GMIT rallied to trail by 0-9 to 1-8 at the break. Leitrim stayed in front until late scores from Stephen Griffin and Ryan earned the students a share of the spoils.
