Higgins rues missed chances
November 07, 2008
Aughnasheelin manager Liam Higgins believes that missed opportunities may have cost his side a provincial final place, after his side narrowly lost out to St Michael's of Galway in the Connacht IFC semi-final last Sunday in Cloone.
After weather the their opponents' storm in the second-half, the Leitrim champions had the gap down to two points, but as they looked to stamp their authority on the game they conceded the game's decisive goal and made their exit from the club provincial stage for the year.
"We're disappointed," Higgins admitted after the game. "You couldn't fault the lads, they gave it 110 per cent but St Michael's were the better team. They were more economical in front of goals and that is maybe where we lost it.
"We had chances and we didn't take them and it left us with an awful lot of work to do in the second-half. We showed the character we have when we got it back to two points. It looked as if we had a chance but like a true Galway team, they came back up the field and scored a goal.
"When we were two points, we had a chance to bring it back to a point but we didn't take it. At this level, you have to take your chances, that's the bottom line."
However, the Aughnasheelin boss remained positive by pointing out that it had been a superb year for the club, with the main aim of capturing the intermediate county championship safely achieved.
"It's been a tremendous year. To win the championship was the goal at the beginning of the year and we achieved that. But we decided we'd give Connacht a good crack and to be honest, we have given a good account of ourselves."
