St Mary's make it ten-in-a-row
October 31, 2008
St Mary's 2-9
Manorhamilton 0-9
Nine points from Man of the Match Gary Hickey was not enough to put a halt to St Mary's claiming the Leitrim Senior Hurling Championship title for an astonishing tenth successive time last Saturday.
Kevin Glancy's side spread their scores around the team, unlike their opponents, and in the end it was the goal of Fergal Carroll and Mick Burns that led them to the title.
It was Carroll's goal that sent the champions into the Ballinamore dressing rooms at the break with a 1-5 to 0-4 lead to work with.
Clement Cunniffe extended that advantage for the leaders inside the first three minutes of the restart before Hickey quickly cancelled it out two minutes later to keep his side well in touch.
Thirteen minutes in the deciding score was landed when substitute Deana Regan sent a pass into the square from the left flank and Burns blasted to the net.
At that there was simply no coming back for Manorhamilton, despite Hickey's resistance, as Padraig McWeeney (two) and Cunniffe pointed to the finishing line and a decade of county titles on the trot was St Mary's.
