Laois sell land for cutdown price

After their defeat to Meath in the opening round Laois take on Wicklow in O'Moore Park.

Laois GAA have sold land they purchased in 2008 for less than half of what they bought it for.

Seven years ago, the county board embarked on an ambitious project which saw them pay €800,000 for 35 acres of land at Dooary, which is adjacent to the Ballyroan Abbey GAA grounds.

The aim was to develop the land into a centre of excellence, but poor drainage meant a lot more than expected needed to be spent on the development.

Last week, at a public auction, the land was sold for €385,000, but despite taking such a hit on the price, Laois GAA chairman Gerry Kavanagh stressed to the Leinster Express that they were happy.

"It was sold at public auction last Friday for €385,000 which worked out at €11,000 per acre, which is quite good," said Kavanagh.

The money raised from the sale will now be used to help finance the redevelopment of the old Portlaoise GAA grounds beside O'Moore Park.
