First NFL Division 3 title for Cavan ladies

May 06, 2008
Cavan senior ladies footballers created their own piece of football history on Saturday, 3rd of May when they narrowly defeated a strong Limerick side in NFL Division 3 decider winning a thrilling encounter on a scoreline of 1-9 to 1-5. The Breffni side dominated the opening half of this final at the famed Semple Stadium, Thurles venue and with the strong breeze at their backs they were good value for their six points lead - 0-8 to 0-2 at the interval. However, it was a different scenario in the second-half as the Limerick side upped their game all over the field and at the end of the third quarter they were right back in the match trailing by one point - 0-9 to 1-5. The closing quarter of the game saw Limerick dominate all over the field, and but for some poor shooting and excellent defensive work by the Breffni side they could well have taken the honours. In the end the Cavan side got the vital break when Renee Murphy bounced on a bad Limerick clearance to send to the Limerick net and give her side the necessary confidence to hold on for a famous success. In a memorable Cavan victory - goalkeeper Christine McCutcheon made some great saves, and she got great support from the back-line where McGorry, Kiernan and Moore all battled hard to close out the Limerick forwards. Ailish Cornyn had another powerful game and was ably assisted by Donna English and Aisling Harton. Claire Murtagh made some terrific catches in the middle of the field, while up front, Bronagh Sheridan produced some excellent skills, while Sharon Cassidy covered a lot of ground. Cavan's Aisling Doonan excelled throughout and was a worthy recipient of the 'player of the match' award. Cavan - C. McCutcheon; J. Moore, S. McGorry, S. Kiernan, A. Harton, S. Cornyn, D. English, P.
