Valerie Mulcahy's decision to open up about her sexuality has been commended by the president of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association.

The Cork ladies football star will appear in an RTE documentary with former hurling goalkeeper Donal Og Cusack about being gay in 21st century Ireland next Monday night.

Speaking to Jackie Cahill in the Irish Examiner, Pat Quill said: "It's a positive thing that people can come out and talk about it and it's not being hidden any longer.

"It may inspire others to do likewise, but my view is that sexuality is nobody's business but their own."

He added: "To come out and go public on it follows on from other people being able to talk about it and also being able to talk about depression.

"That's good for society."
