Meyler steps down

Kerry hurling manager John Meyler
John Meyler has resigned as Kerry hurling manager in the wake of the Kingdom's early exit from the Christy Ring Cup.
Tipped at the start of the year to retain the second tier competition and challenge for promotion from Division 2A of the Allianz League, Kerry failed to live up to expectations and a hugely disappointing season ended with a comprehensive defeat to Kildare in Newbridge on Saturday.
Wexford native Meyler, who was at the helm for the past three years and was in his third spell in charge of the Kingdom, said after Saturday's defeat: "What I wanted and what I got is not enough for me.
"I felt we were very flat. That's our eighth away Christy Ring Cup game in 10 that I have been involved in. So it's too long and too hard and that's not making excuses. Perhaps the hunger was not there. I don't know.
"I have to accept responsibility for that and I am doing that. I have given the best part of three years to it and that's it. I have given it 100 per cent and have no more to give. I have done my time - I can't get any more out of them."
