Ring Cup: London and Kildare secure quarter-final berths
May 12, 2012
London and Kildare will meet Derry and Meath respectively in next weekend's Christy Ring Cup quarter-finals following victories over Mayo and Kerry this afternoon.
London bounced back from their defeat to Meath last weekend by edging out Mayo on a 2-15 to 3-10 scoreline in Ruislip. The Westerners got off to a flying start when two goals from Brian Hunt helped them to a 2-1 to 0-3 lead after 10 minutes. But the Exiles rallied with goals from Jonathan Maher and Martin Finn (who accounted for 1-9 of their tally) to go into the break leading 2-10 to 2-3.
The visitors got themselves back into contention when Cathal Freeman found the net midway through the second half. Further scores from Kenny Feeney and team captain Keith Higgins left just two points in it before Mayo 'keeper Donal O'Brien was denied an equalising goal when his late 20-metre free was diverted over the crossbar.
Last year's champions Kerry are out after they crashed to a 1-16 to 2-21 defeat to Kildare in Newbridge. The Kingdom opened brightly and led by 1-5 to 0-4 after 20 minutes, but the hosts fought back to trail by the minimum, 0-11 to 1-9, at the break.
The momentum remained with Kildare into the second half as six points from Martin Fitzgerald helped them to a surprisingly comfortable win. Mark Moloney, Richie Hoban, Paul Dilly and substitute Gerry Keegan were also impressive for Willie Sunderland's men who will now face Meath in what is a repeat of last month's Allianz League Division 2B final which the Lilywhites won.
