Mayo kingpins take on Dublin dynamos

April 02, 2008
Mayo's Dessie Keegan and Joe McCann will renew rivalries with one of the most dynamic doubles pairings in the modern game, Eoin Kennedy and Egin Jensen (Dublin) in the DALKIA All-Ireland Senior Doubles semi-final on Sunday 6th April. This is a rematch of last year's semi-final clash, where McCann and Keegan fought their way to victory after two straight games. "Last year's semi-final was very competitive, and we're expecting the same again this year," said McCann, who will also contest the All-Ireland Intermediate semi-final in the coming weeks. "Eoin and Egin are a formidable pairing and they've already proven their worth in 40x20 doubles, winning the All-Ireland two years ago; with the experience they have from playing doubles in both codes, they are an extremely difficult pair to beat." Both partnerships had difficult quarter-final contests, but came through heated tiebreaker combat to make this semi-final date. Following his exit from the DALKIA Senior Singles Championship last weekend, Kennedy is anxious to extend his participation in the 40x20 season. "It will be another close battle; we've met Dessie and Joe on a number of occasions in the past and it's always close between us," said Kennedy. "This is our last stab at 40x20 honours, so we're both really up for this game." In the second semi-final, defending champions, Cavan's Paul Brady and Michael Finnegan, will take on Cork's Tony Healy and Colm Jordon in what will also be a heated affair. The Breffni pair defeated Antrim's Owen McKenna and Sean Devine on Tuesday last to book their semi-final place against the Rebels. This will be Healy and Brady's first clash of 2008 and the pair are also set to clash in the DALKIA Senior Singles Final in two weeks time. Meanwhile in the first of the DALKIA Ladies Senior Doubles semi-finals, Roscommon's Leona Doolin and Marianna Rushe will face reigning champions, Antrim's Sibeal McKenna and sister, current World Singles champion, Fiona Shannon. This will be a tough task for the young Roscommon players, but with Doolin debuting on the senior stage in 2008, this is an important step-up for the Connacht young-guns. Also in action in the second semi-final are Kingdom pairing Maria Daly and Ashley Prendeville, who face a tough outing against Kildare's Anna Spence and Eimear Ní Fhallúin. Daly and Spence met earlier in the DALKIA Singles Championship, which was decided by a tiebreaker, and this should be another well contested game.
