Barna GAA Notes
February 02, 2007
Barna U21s claimed the 2006 West Board Championship title on Sunday in
an exciting final against Renvyle. This match had been re-fixed a number
of times due to the bad weather in December and January but it was
certainly worth the wait. In excellent football conditions in Killanin,
the match was played at a very high tempo and in a very sporting manner
by both teams. Barna started the game strongly with scores from Ray
Conneely, Rob Creedon and Kieran Hanley and were dominating the middle
sector of the field. However, Renvyle came back strongly with a couple
of points and but for a fine save from Prionsias McComiskey and a
point-blank block from Paddy Naughton, Renvyle could have had 2 goals.
These close calls seemed to shake Barna to move up another gear and
there then followed more points from Rob Creedon and eventually a
well-taken goal from Tom Mannion.
The half-time score was Barna 1-7, Renvyle 0-2. The game was then turned
on it's head at the start of the second half when Renvyle got through
the Barna defence twice in as many minutes to score 2 goals and bring
the deficit back to 2 points. The Barna team had to dig deep to
re-establish control of the game and this was achieved with points from
Paddy Kennedy and Ray Conneely. Renvyle tried to come back again but the
Barna defence and midfield worked tirelessly to ensure that the game was
closed out, and indeed but for some great defending and goalkeeping from
Renvyle, Barna would have added more to their goal tally in the final
minutes. Final score: Barna 1-12, Renvyle 2-4. Barna now progress to the
U21 county final where they will meet Cortoon.
