O'Mahony hails "great rivalry"

Mayo manager John O'Mahony
Ahead of their NFL meeting this weekend, John O'Mahony has labelled the rivalry between Mayo and Galway as "great".

The counties have met seven times in the past four years and - remarkably - six of those matches resulted in one-point margins either way. Mayo have won the last two games but Sunday's Division One league opener is Joe Kernan's first proper competitive match at the Tribe helm.

Having managed both sides and witnessed the keen rivalry from both sides of the fence, O'Mahony is perhaps more qualified than anyone to comment.

He says: "It really is one of the great rivalries in Irish sport and has been enhanced over the last few years when so many games were won by a point.

"Home or away, league, championship or challenge, Mayo-Galway rivalry is special. There's a respect there which underpins everything."
