Sigerson Cup: Wins for UCC, UUJ and DCU
There were vital wins for UCC, UUJ and DCU in today's second round Ulster Bank Sigerson Cup games.
The day's all-Dublin clash saw DCU edge by UCD thanks to a brace of Brian Sheridan goals which saw his team register a 2-6 to 0-9 victory and secure their passage through to the quarter-finals.
The Meath attacker's first goal helped DCU into a 1-4 to 0-4 lead at the interval and seconds into the restart he fisted in his second major after connecting with a long ball in from midfielder Dermot Sheridan.
Francis McGee (2) and David O'Callaghan kicked the scores to help bring UCD back into the game but the winners defended tenaciously in the closing stages to book their place in the last eight against champions Cork IT.
The holders made sure of their progression through to the quarter-finals when they saw of St Mary's Belfast by 0-11 to 0-5.
Cork ace Daniel Goulding was the star kicking 0-7 over the hour, but CIT were still made to work hard for their victory after the sending-off of Paul Kerrigan in the 47th minute for a second yellow card. A minute after that CJ McGourty put two between the sides and it looked as though the northerners were about to pull off a shock.
However, inspired by Goulding, CIT out-scored their opponents by 0-4 to nothing in the closing stages to set-up a mouth-watering last eight clash with DCU.
At Mardyke, two injury-time points helped UCC snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against NUIG.
Cathal Kenny's goal helped the Galway students into a 1-4 to 0-4 lead at the interval, after a spirited comeback from UCC, and it looked as though NUIG were going to hang on for a memorable victory when they held a 1-5 to 0-7 lead in the 60th minute.
It wasn't to be though, as a close range free from Daithi Casey leveled matters and a long range point from Barry O'Driscoll brought NUIG hearts and pushed UCC on to the next stage of the competition.
In Belfast, local rivals UUJ and Queen's fought it out until the full-time whistle, when only Jimmy Clarke's late point for UUJ separated the sides.
Queen's had been superior in the opening 30 minutes, taking in a 1-7 to 0-5 lead at the break with Sean O'Neill's opportunist goal putting them into what seemed a promising position.
In the opening stages of the restart it still looked as though Queen's were the safe bet, but UUJ came to life in towards the final quarter with points flying over from Conor McManus, Ciaran McGinley and Clarke to level the game.
Queen's regained the lead before both teams swapped goals, but in a sizzling finish McManus pointed to square the sides once more and Clarke took a last-gasp opportunity to send the Jordanstown students through.
Sligo IT put Garada College to the sword with a 1-15 to 0-12 win at Templemore after leading by two points at the break.
Steven Coen's early second-half penalty would provide the catalyst for victory, despite a spirited fight back from the guards in a game that was marred by two red cards, five yellows and a melee.
GMIT had the biggest win of the day when they brushed aside Dundalk IT by 1-18 to 0-9 at Moycullen, where Donegal's Stephen Griffin kicked 1-4.
The Dundalk side had kept with their opponents until the break, when they trailed by 0-8 to 0-5, but scores from Aidan Campbell, Pat Regan and Griffin's goal made sure the second-half would turn the game into a one-sided encounter.
In Limerick, Cavan's Raymond Galligan scored 1-5 to help Athlone IT towards a 1-15 to 1-8 win over UL in the torrential rain.
After only leading by a point at the break, the Athlone side raced through the gears in the second-half and through Galligan they had a real outlet for scores, with the corner-forward's major coming in the 41st minute.
