Canning a big doubt for Kilkenny clash

Joe Canning of Galway
Joe Canning has emerged as a serious doubt for Galway's historic Leinster SHC semi-final clash with Kilkenny at Tullamore on Saturday evening. The Portumna sharpshooter suffered a recurrence of a stomach/groin injury during a training camp in Enfield, Co. Meath last week and has been unable to train since. A Galway source revealed that the 20-year-old All-Star has had to take painkilling injections in order to play over the past few months. "Joe's a major doubt. He's suffered a recurrence of his groin/stomach injury. He wasn't able to train on the last day of our training camp. Joe has had to get a few injections over the last couple of months. We're very concerned about him for Saturday, he might not be able to play. He's very sore." Galway manager John McIntyre will name his team on Thurday, but a decision on Canning's fitness won't be taken until the morning of the game. It goes without saying that his availability is absolutely crucial to the Tribesmen's chances of beating the All-Ireland champions.
