Galway's narrow victory over Sligo in their opening FBD Connacht League defence pleased their manager Liam Sammon.
"It certainly is good to get the year off to a good start, particularly because we are only starting out," he said.
"It was very pleasing to see the younger players do so well. We had a lot of under 21s there and it is great they are able to see what is required at this level.
"There are plenty of positives to take from this game. The confidence of the team was very evident there. Even when they started to run at us after half-time, we didn't panic and we kept cool to force errors. That comes from winning and that gives you confidence and the young lads will benefit from being involved."
New Sligo boss and former Galway midfielder star Kevin Walsh refused to blame the dismissals of three players before half-time for his side's loss.
"Those are the rules there at the moment and we have to abide by them. It is always to be difficult bring in those type of rules, the fouls are often borderline, and it is down to how referees apply them," he said.
"We will have the full panel back together shortly and I am looking to get a common bond together and we will see how it goes from then on."
