Mighty Corofin complete double
December 19, 2008
Corofin 2-12
Caherlistrane 3-7
It took extra-time for Corofin to ensure that they would be claiming both the Galway senior championship and league titles for 2008 last Saturday at Tuam Stadium where they final saw off Caherlistrane by two points.
In a blistering affair, given the heavy underfoot conditions, it was the would-be winners that raced into an early lead thanks to the points of Alan O'Donovan and Damien Burke, but a profitable five-minute spell from Caherlistrane followed, which saw them storm in front.
A pounce in the square from Eric Monahan that hit the net was backed up by two superb pointed frees from Cormac Bane before Monahan had his second goal just moments later when he struck Enda Heneghan's past Bernard Power.
It took some time, but Corofin responded like champions through when Alan O'Donovan sunk their first major on 22 minutes moments before Trevor Burke found David Morris on the edge of the square and he made no mistake in raising his side's second green falg for a one-point lead.
Corofin looked to be well geared up heading into half-time, but the plot here took another dramatic twist when Caherlistrane, who hadn't scored for 15 minutes, were awarded a penalty when Oisin O'Brien was hauled down in the square and Bane struck the spot-kick to the net for a 3-2 to 2-3 interval lead.
The underdogs stretched their lead before at the restart to Bane, but Alan O'Donovan and Alan Burke got Corofin level on 2-6 to 3-3 by the final quarter.
The champions were edging things at this stage and points from substitute Tomás Costello and David Hanly put them ahead buy two before Bane broke a 25-minute drought with a free, and in injury-time the same player was on hand to punish Corofin's indiscipline with another free, which sent the game into extra-time.
Early on in the first-half Rory Glynn was sent off for Caherlistrane for a challenge on Alan O'Donovan, before Costello and O'Donovan sent over the points that saw them into a 2-10 to 3-5 lead at the break.
True to form, the trailers responded and were level thanks to breakthroughs from O'Brien and Bane, before O'Donovan and Costello countered and sealed the deal for Corofin in the final stages.
