Farrell plays down O'Byrne Cup fund threat

November 14, 2007
GPA chief executive Dessie Farrell has played down any potential for damage to a charity fund relating to the O'Byrne Cup if a players strike materialises in the New Year. Louth senior footballers are scheduled to take part in the subsidiary competition in January but that fixture could be scuttled by a strike by the country's intercounty players. The O'Byrne Cup has been used in recent times as a fundraiser for a players' hardship fund with the gates going into the charity's coffers. "We don't see that as an issue," said Farrell. "Essentially there is a benevolent fund within the GAA to accommodate any cases of hardship, and the GPA likewise has a benevolent fund - so we don't see that as an issue whatsoever."
