Gardai have launched an investigation after thousands of euros were stolen from a well-known Dublin GAA club at the weekend.

The clubhouse of St Oliver Plunketts/Eoghan Ruadh was raided in the early on Saturday morning - just hours after the club had celebrated a first Dublin Senior B Hurling Championship title in 16 years.

The joy was short lived however, as members discovered the following morning that intruders had smashed their way through the clubhouse rear door and took off with an estimated €12,000 in cash.

Included in the robbery were the takings from the previous night along with money raised from a fundraiser following Dublin's All-Ireland victory the previous Sunday at Croke Park.

Sources speaking to The Evening Herald claimed that "the alarm may have been tampered with and the alarm system knocked off" allowing the robbers to gain access undetected.

The damage to the clubhouse, which is located on the Navan Road on Dublin's northside, could come to several thousand euro.

Gardai are currently reviewing CCTV footage as part of their investigation into the incident.
