May 13, 2013
An Óige - the Irish Youth Hostel Association will be hosting a Youth Forum at the Mansion House on Tuesday 14 May at 5:30pm with Jim Gavin, the Dublin Senior Football Manager, as key speaker. Naoise Ó Muirí, the Lord Mayor will also be speaking at the event.
Young people between the ages of 16 and 30 are invited to attend the Forum in the Mansion House, which will provide a platform for the discussion of youth travel, adventure, hostelling and volunteering as its main topics. The forum will also be discussing the opportunities and benefits of embracing the hostelling adventure and volunteering with An Óige as a way of giving something back to the community.
An Óige, the Irish Youth Hostel Association is a not-for-profit organisation which was established over 80 years ago with the goal of reaching out to young people to embrace a world of adventure through hostelling. The forum also provides an opportunity for new volunteers to lead An Óige and add to its mission to awaken the spirit of adventure in all.
The current recession brings with it the opportunity to discover the advantages of hostelling, and travel in this way teaches people to become self-reliant while forming life-long friendships with kindred spirits. Hostelling is more than just budget accommodation - it involves travelling through Ireland and globally under your own steam, becoming more resourceful and self-sufficient, and meeting and experiencing other cultures throughout the world through independent travel.
An Óige was a founding member of the International Youth Hostel Federation, now Hostelling International, which has more than 3000 youth hostels worldwide throughout 95 countries.
