Fitzgibbon Cup: Mahony and UCC run riot
February 02, 2012
UCC sent out a warning to their rivals when they blitzed DCU by 29 points in last night's Fitzgibbon Cup Group D opener at a freezing Mardyke.
UCC 7-18
DCU 0-10
As the scoreline suggests, the Cork students were totally dominant and have put themselves in a strong position to earn a home quarter-final berth ahead of next week's trip to Galway to face GMIT. Waterford and Ballygunner star Pauric Mahony had a field day, finishing with a personal tally of 3-3, while Limerick's Willie Griffin chipped in with 2-5.
DCU were competitive early on and only trailed by 0-2 to 0-3 at the end of the first quarter. But UCC took control after that and Mahony's first goal from a 20-metre free in the 25th minute had them perched on a 1-12 to 0-5 lead at the interval.
The floodgates opened after the restart when Stephen Moylan, Griffin and Mahony all found the net for the rampant hosts.
