UCD back in Dublin SHC
January 19, 2012
UCD will compete in this year's Dublin SHC for the first time since 2005.
The Belfield outfit were forced to withdraw from the championship in 2006 after the captains from seven senior hurling clubs in the capital at the time - Ray Mangan (Kilmacud Crokes), Risteard Brennan (St Vincent's), Emmet Carroll (Ballyboden St Enda's), Seán Power (Commercials), Johnny McGuirk (Craobh Chiaráin), Brendan McLoughlin (O'Toole's) and Trevor McGrath (Faughs) - signed a letter threatening to boycott the championship if the students were included in the draw.
With a host of inter-county stars in their ranks and Michael 'Babs' Keating as manager, UCD were deemed too strong by many to compete in the Dublin SHC after they won back-to-back titles in 2004 and '05, and contested the '05 Leinster club final against James Stephens of Kilkenny.
But UCD have always defended their right to enter both the Dublin senior football and hurling championships. Their participation in this year's SHC will bring the number of competing clubs to 15.
