Hiney: Success will bring crowds

July 04, 2009
Stephen Hiney believes support for the Dublin hurlers will swell if the team continues its current rate of improvement. The vastly-experienced Ballyboden St. Enda's clubman has long looked on in envy at the huge support the Dublin footballers command, but feels a couple of more big results could have the same supporters flocking to see the hurlers as well. "The support for the footballers is definitely something to be envious of," he said ahead of tomorrow's Leinster SHC final against Kilkenny. "They get massive crowds and they have success as well - maybe they haven't got the All-Ireland but they are chasing it. "But you have to start somewhere. We would love to get a massive crowd there, but we are aware that here is a core of Dublin supporters that have stuck with us when we haven't had the results as well. "We know that they have been at every game for us for the last few years. And there is certainly a strong, albeit small compared to the footballers, support for the hurlers. "At the Wexford game, there was a huge support for Dublin. If we got more good results the public would really row in behind us." He added: "With the footballers being so successful over the last while in Leinster, it deserves to be the glamour sport - they have produced the goods. "But if we were able to produce a few more big wins and maybe take a few more scalps, then I believe the public would row in behind us. "I think it will change with the more results and big teams that we compete with, the supporters will definitely come out."
