Glasdrumman GAC Notes

May 21, 2012
Senior Football
On a grey, cold but dry Friday evening last, our senior footballer travelled to Drumgath looking to maintain our remarkable start to the season.
We always expect a tough encounter with Drumgrath and Friday night's match was certainly no exception.
The first half was a very dull affair with both teams only sporadically piecing patches of fluent football together. The underfoot conditions were at best described as treacherous and with both teams totally committed in the tackle scoring opportunities were few and far between.
Drumgath had opened with a point by after around ten minutes we opened our account with a point from Mo Magorrian.
Both defences have to be complimented on restricting the forwards to outside chances of scoring.
The home side opened a two point advantage but further points Mo and Connnaire Harrison brought the score to three a piece. Drumgrath added another point just before half time to lead by 0-4 to 0-3.
The first score of the second half went to Drumgrath to restore their two point advantage.
The Glasdrumman machine kicked into gear and a decisive move found our sharper shooter Connaire Harrison inside the fourteen. He rounded his minder and forced a great save from the advancing Drumgath keeper. We were awarded a penalty from the resulting melee. Connaire despatched the ball low into the net.
Our boys increased the intensity of the game and another true pass found Mo Magorrian who in turn slipped the ball to Connaire who chalked up his second goal on the night to give us 2-3 to 0-5 lead.
The game really busts to life and Drumagath pushed forwarded only to be met by our well organised and disciplined defensive unit who tackled ferociously and fairly to restrict Drumgrath to a point from a free.
Mo Magorrian added and another point from play and won a close in free which Connaire duly converted.
The game then swung Drumgath's way for a mixture of reasons, from carelessly losing ball possession, dubious decisions going against us, the very testing conditions and Drumgath.
During this period our five point lead was turned into a two point deficit as Drumgath clocked up one goal and four points.
When even the Gods seemed to be conspiring against us the team of 2012 proved that they are full of character by regaining their composure and in three telling attacks Mo Magorrian scored two classy points from play and Connaire added a third from a free.
As they say a two point lead is never safe and Drumgrath determined not to lose on their home patch won clean possession at mid field and drove at the heart of our defence. A high looping pass known in the State's NFL as the 'Hail Mary' found the Drumgath full forward who fisted into net.
With our hundred percent record on the line and time not on our side the evening had just got even greyer for us. But the team of 2012 came true again and it was our county man Shane Harrison who drove the ball between the stick to keep our unbeaten record intact.
Another great team performance from one to seventeen. Frank O'Neill continues to lead from the back aided by Sean, Marty, the two Chris's, Art and Dan. Colm and Shane negated the treat of the Drumgrath mid field. In attack the tireless running of Cathal, Raymond, Sean and James coupled with Connaire and Mo sharp shooting proved they are much more than a one man show.
Team:- Sean Cunningham, Frank O'Neill, Dan McCartan, Chris Cassidy, Dan McCartan, Marty O'Neill, Chris McDowell, Colm Gribben, Shane Harrison, James McDowell, Raymond Clarke, Sean McDowell, Mo Magorrian, Connaire Harrison and Cathal Rodgers. Subs:- Ryan Doran for Dan McCartan(45 mins) and Shaun Brennan for Cathal Rodgers (55 mins).
Our next match is in Darragh Cross on Friday night 7.30pm.
Shane Harrison's hard work and commitment has been rewarded by making the final cut in the Down senior panel. Congratulation on making a winning senior debut against Armagh on Sunday last.

Baileghlas U 14.
It was a great all round team performance from the team and subs to get a well deserved victory under their belts. Scoring 5-13 to 1-4 on the way proves that their hard work will pay off. Well done Ronan Grant, Padraig Stevenson, Harry Thompson, James McDowell, Aidan and Jonathan McVeigh.
They have a busy schedule this week when they play Bosco in St Colman's on Tuesday, travel to Longstone on Thursday night 7.30pm and away to Saval on Monday night.

U12, U10, & U8
Anyone who took the time to go and watch Glasdrumman and Attical in the U10 Mourne League on Monday 7th May were treated to a cracking game of football. With both teams intent on playing football it was end to end right from the start with goals galore. Attical were the first to settle with a couple of early points, but Glasdrumman got a foot on the game, and with a forward line of Sean Kelly, Paul Kearney and Cormac McComb threatening to run riot with some well taken goals, it was Glasdrumman who had a good healthy lead at half-time. The second half saw the home team get on top after a few positional changes and they really cut into Glasdrumman's lead with some well taken points. With two points awarded for an over and with Attical's ability to take their points, this was going to be a hard one to call. Orla Smith was having a cracking game in the Glasdrumman goal and a back line of Brogan O Hare, Darragh Rooney and Jamie Nicholls who was outstanding throughout, battled hard against a very capable Attical forward line. Eoin McVeigh and "Gooch" Stevenson gave all they had in mid-field against strong opponents. Glasdrumman were forced into a few changes with John Lavery coming on for the injured Cormac McComb and young Caolam Smith and Niall McCartan also got in on the act. When the final whistle blew, all eyes were on the referee as he tallied up scores. With players and supporters getting their breath back, it was fitting that both teams finished with thirty one points a piece. Well done to both teams for a tremendous and sporting game of juvenile football and a credit to their clubs and mentors.

Saturday May 12th Glasdrumman hosted an u10 blitz, with teams from Mayobridge, Rostreveor, An Riocht, Attical and Ballymartin. Plenty of football was had by everyone with the Glasdrumman team putting in some great performances, and the football they played on the day was a joy to watch. The Glasdrumman team on the day was Caelan O Hare, Brogan O Hare, Eoin McVeigh, Kathleen Rooney, Jamie Nicholls, "The Stick" Stevenson, Sean Kelly, "Gooch" Stevenson, Cormac McComb and Tara Grant. Many thanks to Mary Poppins(Caroline), birthday girl Nanny McPhee(Bronagh) and to the parents for the lovely refreshments on the day.

Wishing a speedy recovery to John Lavery after his recent injury..hope he can still get his Jackson glove on.

Glasdrumman U10's played their third game in the Mourne League against An Riocht on 13thMay.
Having won one and drawn one they completed the set when losing to a well drilled and organised An Riocht team. Right from the throw-in this was proving to be a difficult game for Glasdrumman. The "Stick" and the "Gooch" in mid-field were finding it hard against their taller opponents, but their clever running into space for kick-outs was proving to be the better option. The forward line of Cormac McComb, Sean Kelly and Paul Kearney, battled hard but were always second best to a determined home defence. An over-worked back line of Darragh Rooney, Jamie Nicholls and Eoin McVeigh were under a lot of pressure, but young Eoin was holding his own and was a constant threat when pushing forward - a real live wire with a bright future. Orla Smith was having her usual solid game in goal but had no chance with the goals that went in. A disappointing display from Glasdrumman who know they can play much better than they showed on the night.

The B game was a better game for Glasdrumman with Aine Trimble and Tara Grant showing well, along with Brogan O Hare, Orla Smith and wee Ollie Thompson whose hard work was rewarded with a well taken penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way (Bayern Munich could be doing with him). Well done to all players who took part on the night.
There will be an U8 blitz this Saturday in Mayobridge. All players to be at the "Hill" at 9.15am.
There will be no U10 training tonight (Wednesday). U8 training will be at 11am Sunday morning at Quarter Rd Pitch.
U12's will play in Mitchels tonight (Wednesday) at 7pm. All players to be at the "Hill" for 5.40 PM.
