Aughlisnafin club notes

May 14, 2012
After suffering a disappointing defeat against St Michael's on Tuesday night the Fin ladies got their second win of the season away to Bright on Saturday evening. The girls struggled to retain possession in the forward line in the first 20 minutes and with Bright constantly on the attack with wind advantage the Fin were 2-5 down. However with the girls displaying sheer determination and fight Bright's defence was breached by Amanda Maginn with a superbly taken goal. This gave the girls the confidence that was needed going into the second half.

From the beginning of this half the Fin dominated the play with the half forwards setting Jolene Flanagan up with a skilfully taken goal. The Bright keeper could do nothing but look on as it sailed into the top right hand corner of the net. With Bright feeling the pressure they retaliated with force but were unable to breach the full back line of Martina Flanagan, Corinne Flanagan and Aine 'Rocky' McClean. With Jody Rice winning possession in the middle of the field and cleverly working the ball up to the forwards, Lisa McAleenan was able to break through at speed to rattle the ball into the back of the net. Lisa also tagged on a point.

The girls provided the spectators with an entertaining match, which displayed both good teamwork and spirit throughout the hour of play. Final score Aughlisnafin 4-6 Bright 3-8. Fin squad : J McAleenan, M Flanagan, C Flanagan, A McClean, N Flanagan, S Flanagan, A McClean, L Lambe, J Rice, N McAlinden, J Flanagan (1-0), O Flanagan, L McAleenan (1-1), A Maginn (2-5), N McClean, A Maginnis, S Leeson. History was made last Sunday as the first ever Aughlisnafin Girls u14 team lined out against Burren in their first game of the season. The newly formed team, a mixture of Aughlisnafin and Dundrum girls, showed great spirit and determination from start to finish. Alex Murray made several good saves in goals in the first half before moving outfield in second half. Alice Mc Alea , Lisa Magennis, Roisin McComiskey and Niamh Davis stood out in the backline with tenacious tackling and good support play. Cliona McComiskey and Rachel Quinn showed tremendous effort and covered a lot of ground in midfield. Up front Christina Shields and Rachelle Connolly were involved in several attacks with several efforts drifting wide.

However the girls were up against a strong and experienced Burren team who were victorious in the end. The girls played well as a team and showed great potential for the rest of the season. After good wins over Ardglass and Carryduff C in recent weeks the u12s made it three wins out of three in the grading series of games with a comfortable win over a young Kilclief side. With one eye on the u14s game against St Johns the following evening the u10s got to play the full 50 minutes. Aaran Flanagan is fast making a name for himself as the Fin number 1 with a yet another clean sheet and when switched outfield in the second half he scored three points including two superb fisted scores. The starting back four of Morgan Croskery (0-1), Ruari King (2-0), Ruairi Quinn and Conor Matthews were commanding throughout and when played in attack in the second period they didn't disappoint. Oran Flanagan (1-8) and Eoin Lundy (1-4) both clearly benefitting from their involvement with the u14s ran the show orchestrating many of the teams scores with a maturity which belies their age. The forward quartet of Jamie Allen (1-1), Shea Croskery (1-5) Adam Lenaghan (1-0) and Conall King (0-1) worked well as a unit and all getting on the scoresheet. Jack Matthews, who is another showing well for the u14s, and Cathal Murphy both started on the bench and came in during the first half as the management rotated the players every 5 minutes for the duration of the game in keeping with the spirit of Go Games. The u12s have been promoted to Section B this season after finishing runners up last season in Section C added to sterling displays in the grading games. Tougher times lie ahead with the first league game away to Bredagh next Sunday at 12 noon.

Last Monday evening the u14 boys grabbed their first win with a comfortable 2-9 to 0-3 victory over St Paul's . It was a great performance by the lads. The Fin led 0-6 to 0-2 at half time with the scores coming from Eoin Travers (0-3. 1f), Sean Flanagan (0-2) and Jonathan Allen (0-1). In the second half the Fin scored a further 2-3 while resolute defending restricted St Paul's to a solitary point. Sean Flanagan adding a goal and a point to his tally. Eoin Travers marked a great display as captain with a soccer styled effort into the bottom corner. Oran Flanagan and Eoin Lundy also chipped over a point apiece. Aaran Flanagan kept a clean sheet in goals. The full backs Ruairi Quinn and Faelan Murphy were superb throughout. Oran Flanagan and Ruairi Toner had outstanding games at half back with both winning a lot of possession and set up numerous attacks. The midfield pairing of Sean Flanagan and Eoin Lundy dominated and both showed tremendous industry in getting up and down the pitch. Eoin Travers was captain tonight and led by example with a maruading performance at right half forward.
