Senior football
St Johns were the latest victims of our senior footballer's excellent form.
Despite only three days between the hard fought victory over Ardglass and this fixture our boys were soon back in the groove.
Shane Harrison and Colm Gribben are developing a great partnership at 8 and 9 and it was they who set the tone for the match.
We did not capitalise on our early opportunities but our defence started with great intensity making St Johns work hard for any openings.
The dead lock was broken when Connaire Harrison found his range and scored a classy point from play followed by his first goal.
St Johns put us under pressure and won a free which they failed to convert and we replied with a fast penetrating move which saw Cathal Rodgers slip Connaire Harrison in for another goal.
Our defence continued to answer all the questions St John asked of them and Connaire Harrison posted two more points before Chris McKay registered St John's second score and Darren Burns latched on to a good through ball and beat Ronan McDowell with a precise finish.
Our lads remained composed and with Shane Harrison growing in stature with every game delivered a game ball to Brother Connaire who recorded his second goal. Despite St Johns efforts our defensive unit broke up they attacks and half backs Chris McDowell, Marty O'Neill and Dan McCartan reading the breaks coupled with releasing clever passes to the busy Sean and James McDowell who in turn supplied the industrious Ramy Clarke and Mo Magorrian who between them added another goal and two points before Chris McKay momentarily stemmed the flow.
Half time score 4-6 to 1-2.
The second half continued a great pace and Ramy Clarke won a free in mid field and quickly dispatched to Connaire Harrison who was fouled. He tapped over the resulting free.
The was a exchange to a couple of points with St Johns with the pick of them being a direct solo run from Shane Harrison which he drove over the bar.
They say when you are hot your hot and that is one way of describing Connaire Harrison's performance. Whether you feed the ball in high or low he can secure possession and usually find the target. Yet again a swift break from our defence for Harrison who found himself one on one with the keeper and there was only going to be one result. Yes Connaire hard scored his fourth goal on the night.
Credit has to be given to St Johns who endeavoured to play good clean football but on the night there was one main story. Connaire Harrison added another point from play to take his personal tally to 4-8 on the night.
St Johns scored two more points to leave the final score 5-10 to 1-7.
Yes a convincing victory with a high conversion rate by the forwards but it should not go unnoticed the part played by the whole team including the full back line of Francis O'Neill, Art McCartan and Chris Cassidy who ability to force their opponents into countless errors an pounce on every breaking ball. Another great bit of skill was the great save Ronan McDowell made in the second half to totally break St John's hearts.
There will be a break in the senior footballer until Friday 18th May when we travel to Drumgath, throw in 7.30pm.
U-12 Football
On Sunday 6th April Glasdrumman played host to Annaclone in the first round of this year's U12Gaelic Football League, and what a show the home team put on. Annaclone opened with a goal in the first couple of minutes, but Glasdrumman retaliated within seconds with a goal of their own. Once the home side got their score it was plain sailing from there on. Their show of skill and teamwork was nothing short of tremendous. Goalie Orla Smith was determined to keep the ball well away from the nets, along with her defending team mates of Matt Brennan, Kerri Grant, Katie Smith, Caelan O Hare, Aidan McVeigh and Jamie Nicholls. Throughout the game there were some fantastic scores from mid fielders Padraig Stevenson and Rónan McGivern who both supported and worked well together. The Annaclone defence was really put under pressure when they faced Glasdrumman very hungry and strong forward line up of Harry Thompson, Eoin and Jonathon McVeigh, Chloe Stevenson, the "Stick"Stevenson and the "Gooch"Stevenson each of which contributed scores that lead to a well deserved victory on the day. Well Done all!
