Aughlisnafin club notes
April 29, 2012
Aughlisnafin seniors were at home to Bright last Monday evening. It was a close first half with Bright taking a 0-7 to 0-6 lead into the interval. Despite the Fin edging a point ahead early in the second half a ten minute spell saw Bright regain control to hit four unanswered points. Collie McVeigh was hauled down when through on goal twice and the pointed frees converted were scant consolation when goals were required. Final score Aughlisnafin 0-11 Bright 0-15. Scorers for the Fin: Colum McVeigh 0-4, Paul Flanagan 0-3, James Brannigan 0-2, Rory McMullan 0-1, Chris Doran 0-1.
The seniors were also away to Mitchels last Friday evening. A slow start saw the Fin on the backfoot as the Newry side took a 0-11 to 0-2 lead into the half time interval. The game being switched from Greenbank to Derrylecka when the team arrived in Newry didn't help matters. The Fin made a better game of it in the second half with a tally of 0-9 but losing 3 cheap goals while trying to chase the game did not help their cause. Final score Mitchels 3-14 Aughlisnafin 0-11. Scorers for the Fin: James Brannigan 0-5, Sean Willoughby 0-3, Patrick Flanagan 0-1, Ciaran Rice 0-1, Colum McVeigh 0-1. The Fin had excellent performances from Noel Travers in defence with Ciaran Rice and Patrick Flanagan showing well in attack with both getting on the scoresheet too.
With the games coming thick and fast injuries are taking their toll with a different starting fifteen from one game to the next. Next up are Dromara at home on Monday evening (result not known at time of writing) and Ballykinlar also at home this Thursday evening. Thankfully there will be no games after this for a fortnight which will afford those injured or nursing injuries a chance to recover.
The ladies picked up their first two points of the season with a well deserved 2-8 to 1-9 home win against a strong Carryduff team last Saturday evening. The girls got off to a shaky start with Carryduff dominating most of the play leaving the Fin 1-4 down twenty minutes in. However as the half wore on the girls grew in confidence and after being impeded in the square Tara Flanagan was rewarded a penalty which Jody Rice sent in to the top left hand corner of the net. With moral up the scores kept coming with Aisling Brown 0-1, Nuala O'Hare 1-1, Jody Rice 1-4, Laura Lamb 0-1 and Nuala McAlinden 0-1 all on target. The Fin turned a seven point deficit into a two point lead with ten minutes remaining. Carryduff fought back hard but after an amazing save from Amanda Maginn in goals and good support work in the backline from Corinne Flanagan and Aine McClean Carryduff were unable to add to their tally. It was a great team performance from all the girls and they will look to build on this in the coming weeks ahead. Training continues every Monday and Thursday eveings at 6.30 pm. Ladies match away to St. Michael's this Saturday night is postponed. Date of re-fixture to be confirmed.
The u8s and u10s took part in the Go Games Blitz last Saturday morning hosted by St Johns. Both teams played very well against the hosts and also Saul. The level of skill by all teams is testament to the effort the participating clubs are putting in at this level and some will surely wear the red and black in the years to come. Conall King, Jack Keenan, Rachel Crilly and Anthony Quinn all finding the net for the u8s. Aaran Flanagan, Morgan Croskery, Conor Matthews , Conor Steen and Cathal Murphy all showing well for the u10s.
The u12s travelled to Ardglass last Sunday morning and recorded a comfortable win in the end but they were made to work hard throughout by the homesters. The Fin's u10s players Aaran Flanagan, Conor Matthews and Morgan Croskery showed they were more than capable at this grade with mature and composed displays with all three sending over points. Conor sending the upright crashing down with one effort. Oran Flanagan, Eoin Lundy and Jack Matthews impressed in defence while up front Adam Lenaghan, Cathal Murphy and Ruairi Quinn were involved in many scores. The u12s will be at home to Kilclief this Sunday with a 12 noon throw in. All players on pitch for 11.30 am.
The u14s suffered a reversal to a physically bigger and stronger Teconnaught side when both teams met last Wednesday evening. Despite the poor conditions the skill and performance was excellent and they managed to score 1-5. Adam Lenaghan got the Fin's goal with Oran Flanagan 0-2 and Eoin Travers 0-3 getting the points. Adam also had a goal chalked off for a square ball. The Fin also had solid performers in Shea Croskery, Darren Toner, Ruairi Toner and Eoin Lundy. The u14s are in Ballykinlar this Wednesday evening to play St Josephs. Next Monday 7th May the u14s will be at home to St Pauls.

Well done to senior players Rory Murphy, Sean Willoughby, James Brannigan and Patrick Flanagan on completing the Kilcoo GAC Mourne Challenge within the four hours. The four lads finished in second place 30 minutes ahead of the winning team despite the fact that three of them played an hours football the night before. Finishing runners up the lads got their entrance fee back and so this has boosted their fundraising efforts enormously. Anyone who has collected sponsorship money please arrange to forward to Rory Murphy asap. Donations still welcome. Superb stuff lads !
The club will be hosting a fun day in Annsborough from 1 to 6 pm this Sunday as part of the La na gClub 2012. Activities will include poc fada, punt fada, races and games for all ages. There will be a burger stand and refreshments. Everyone welcome.
