Clonduff Camogie News

Feile 2012:

Clonduff U14 Camogs took part in County Feile at Castlewellan on Saturday and started there campaign with a narrow one point victory over Castlewellan. The following game against a bigger and stronger Bredagh team resulted in Clonduff heading for the Shield competition, where they had a good win against Mayobridge but were finally put out by a very skilful Ballycran side. Liatroim and Portaferry contested the Cup Final with Ballycran and Ballygalget playing out the Shield Final - Portaferry and Ballygalget were eventual winners on the day.

The overall standard of the Feile competition was outstanding and it is evident that fantastic work is being done at this age group, particularly in the Ards and it is this standard that all other clubs are aspiring to. There were great individual performances within the Clonduff team but the whole panel played there part with many of the current U12 team competing at a very high standard.

Congratulations to Rachel Harper who competed in the skills competition on Friday evening.

Feile Panel: Sinead McPolin, Rachel Harper, Emma Gallagher, Chloe Nelson, Hannah McAteer (Capt.), Caoimhe Fitzpatrick, Elle Fitzpatrick, Tiarnach Fegan, Ciara McPolin, Aoife Murray, Aoibheann O'Hare, Catherine Lively, Katie McGilligan, Ellen Lively, Cara Boden, Molly Brown, Niamh Fitzpatrick and Clara Cowan.

U16 League:

Portaferry v Clonduff
2-02 5-02

Clonduff made the long journey to Portaferry for this their second league encounter and came home with a win. Playing a number of players in different positions this was not exactly a convincing performance from this talented team but none the less they secured the points with a well earned victory. Rachel Harper, after a great performance a Feile, put in a fine game scoring 2 goals when she was moved to full forward and Jenna Boden at centre forward had a great second half supported by a hard working Elizabeth Wilson at midfield. Petrina Lively is still recovering from a back injury which has prevented her playing to date but hopefully she will be fit to return soon to strengthen the team and give them more scoring options.

Scorers: Caoimhe Morgan (2-0), Jenna Boden (0-2), Rachel Harper (2-0), Clare O'Hagan (1-0).

Div II League:

The Intermediate team continue to struggle with numbers and suffered another defeat to a young and skilful Ballycran side last week. However the team does not lack spirit and fight which was evident from the second half display in McKenna Park, where each and every player fought to the final whistle.

Ulster Senior League:

The senior team hosted Ballycastle in the Ulster league last week and came up against a young team who gave an exhibition in point taking. Many of these players were groomed at Garron Tower and Cross & Passion which have strong traditions in schools Camogie. However Clonduff were without many of their senior players through both injury or college commitments and undoubtedly their presence may not have changed the outcome but certainly would have changed the score line. Credit goes to all the players who stepped up to the mark, some of them very young, and the second half performance was a credit to all involved.

All Ireland Minor 'C' Semi-finals:

Down v Laois
2-15 3-06

Down minors progressed to the All Ireland 'C' Final to meet Kerry on Sat 5th May at a venue to be decided. The game against Laois at a fine Trim GAA complex on Saturday was a game of 2 halves; Down actually led at half time on a 2-11 to 0-02 score line but the second half was a different story when Laois had the wind advantage and obviously being disappointed with their first half performance had come out after the break ready to redress the imbalance. This they did and a 20 min dominant spell where Down seemed to lose all composure and positional awareness resulted in a three goal blitz by Laois and brought the teams within 4 points of each other.
Down were the better side, both in terms of skill and playmaking but Laois were big and strong and used this to their advantage on many occasions. Down lost star defender Caitlin McCartan through injury in the first half and Clonduff's Jenna Boden replaced her, playing as the free player for large parts of the second half when Laois decided to double mark Niamh Mallon. Once again Niamh Mallon was outstanding with both her work rate and point taking which really is a joy to watch! Clonduff's Clare McGilligan entered the fray late in the second half at full forward and held the ball up in the forward line which was needed in the final ten minutes when Down composed themselves with a couple of late points.
'Caman to Croker':

Clonduff U12's have been selected to participate in the Camogie Associations 'Caman to Croker' U12 Go Games in Croke Park on Sat 5th May. This is an amazing opportunity for these girls to play on the hallowed turf of Croke Park, something many players will never do. There are 48 clubs from all over the country participating on the day. The club is restricted to taking only 15 players and those players have been informed, parents can and are encouraged to attend the event, details of which will be given as soon as possible.
