Aughlisnafin club notes

April 23, 2012
The seniors travelled up to Holywood for a league match against St Pauls last Monday evening. In windy and wet conditions the Fin picked up their first win of the season when they defeated the hosts by 11 points. On winning the toss the acting captain Chris Doran elected to play into the wind in the first half. It was a turgid first half affair with both teams finding it difficult to master the tricky conditions and both sides posted three wides apiece. By the 15th minute it was a point apiece, the Fin score coming from the left boot of Rory McMullan. Further points from Ciaran Rice and a free from Shane Mosey Mooney were cancelled out by St Pauls to leave it all square at the short whistle. St Pauls 0-3 Aughlisnafin 0-3.

After the restart the Fin went ahead with a point from Mooney but St Pauls capitalised on a defensive error to poke the ball into the Fin net. The Fin re-grouped and immediately went up the field with a flowing move which saw Sean Willoughby score a superb goal. From then on the Fin dominated the remainder of the match scoring a further 2-7 with St Pauls only mustering 2 points in reply.

It was a hard working second half performance from the Fin with Francie Boden, James Brannigan, Anthony Quinn and Rory McMullan (0-2) strong in defence. Shane Mooney (1-5) and Sean Willoughby (1-1) gave St Pauls a torrid night with a combined 2-5 from play. Midfielder Donagh Steele capped another virtuso display with the score of the game when he fired into the net from 20 yards. Chris Doran and Ciaran Rice won plenty of break ball and chipped in with a point apiece.
Last Friday night the seniors were at home to neighbours Dundrum. With a depleted squad due to injuries and players unavailable the Fin had just the bare fifteen with their captain Paul Flanagan, who was not passed fit to start, the only sub. Nonetheless the homesters give a good account of themselves holding Dundrum to seven points at half time while scoring three themselves. James Brannigan taking over the free taking duties from the injured Shane Mooney sent over 4 from 5 placed balls. In the second half Dundrum with their two inside forwards Venny and Rooney causing problems Dundrum won and converted a penalty and went on to score another six points. The Fin scoring a single second half point with Brannigan again on target from a free kick. Final score Aughlisnafin 0-5 Dundrum 1-13.

At half time the Finne na nÓg u8s played an exhibition game against their Dundrum counterparts with superb skill and score taking on display from both teams. Kevin McComiskey and Caitlin Ward making their Fin debut. Fin team : C Lenaghan, C King, N King, O Maguire, R Crilly, K McComiskey, C Ward, A Quinn, M Quinn, S Quinn, C McKibben, R Tweedie, D Murphy. The Ladies also had two matches in the last week, first up was against St John Bosco on Tuesday evening. Great display from Laura Lambe in nets and Tiarna and Justine Clarke also putting in good solid performances, with the hard working Lisa Mc Aleenan and Jody Rice also showing well for the Fin. Bosco doing enough to win the game.
The Fin Ladies were away to Saul ladies last Saturday with Jolene Flanagan, Sheenagh Flanagan, Nuala O Hare and Aoife Mc Clean all having good games but the ladies suffered their second reversal of the season.
The Ladies are at home to Carryduff on Saturday at 7.00 pm.
The u14 lads did very well in their first ever league game at this grade. With eight under 12s in the squad of fifteen Darragh Cross dominated the first half possession but in the second half the Fin increased their hold on the ball and started to move the ball well while defending resolutely. Final score Aughlisnafin 1-6 Darragh Cross 8-14.
