McCartan not counting on history

Down manager James McCartan
James McCartan insists that Down's 100 per cent record in All-Ireland finals will count for little when they face Cork on September 19.

The Mournemen have won all five of the Sam Maguire Cup deciders they have contested and recently maintained their remarkable record of having never lost to Kerry in the championship.

"To be honest, the history is meaningless to this bunch of guys," the Down manager said.

"There's a group of people of a certain age that it means a lot more to. We would like to create our own piece of history.

"Obviously, we don't want to be the team that loses the first All-Ireland but if it happens, it happens. I would gladly lose out and lose our record to Kerry or lose an All-Ireland final if I knew that Down were going to be competing at the top table on a regular basis.

"If somebody said to me that winning against Kerry would mean that we were going to take another 16 years to get back here, I wouldn't be happy. We want to be here, year in, year out. It's easier said than done. We're into a final and I'm not sure how many All-Ireland finals Cork have been in in the last number of years, but certainly more than us. We have an uphill task there."
