Anita Clonduff Club Notes 29th June 2009
Clonduff Community is in deep shock and mourning on the tragic death of 10-year-old Daniel Andre, which occurred when he got into difficulties in 'The Mill Pool' (on the Bann River at Mussen's Corner) on Wednesday 24th June just before 5 pm. He died early on Thursday morning. He played both football and hurling for the club and for St Patrick's Primary School. Daniel is the son of Donna (formerly Devlin) and Luigi Andre and younger brother of Lauren (Camogie and Ladies Football) and older brother of little Kara. May God Rest his little soul and comfort his family, friends and playmates!
As a mark of respect to Daniel and his family there was not Club activity until after his funeral on Saturday evening.
Best Wishes to Ross and the rest of the squad for the All Ireland Qualifier Game on Saturday evening

125 SPONSORED WALK - Sunday 12th July
As part of the 125 celebrations the club's sponsored walk will take place this year to the Goward Dolmen on the Boley Fair Sunday (12th July) leaving the Clubrooms at 12.00. The walk will follow part of the old main road from Newry to Downpatrick turning up the lane at the Primary School, crossing the Old Clonduff Road and continuing along the lane out onto the Goward Road. The walkers will then follow the Goward Road to the Dolmen.
Walkers can then relax at the Dolmen, have some refreshments and then proceed back onto the Goward Road where they can be picked up. Walkers can also 'dander' back to the club at their leisure if they so wish.
The walk replaces the Fun Run which has taken place for a number of years. All mentors and players over the age of 10 are expected to take part in the walk. Parents of the younger players are welcome to take a sponsor card and accompany the children on the walk. Anyone else who would like to take part in the walk will also be most welcome. Sponsor cards will be issued to all teams this week. This is a good opportunity to visit one of our historic monuments and take the old route of one of the county's main roads.
So get out with your children, enjoy a great walk, lovely scenery, visit a historic monument and raise much needed funds to develop our new pitch. All in all a good day is in store.
Football
U16 FC - Rostrevor v Clonduff - Clonduff bowed out of the Championship on Sunday afternoon to Rostrevor who were the stronger team. However, it was mainly Rostrevor's ability to score goals that was the main difference in the teams.
The U12 Footballers went to Rostrevor in the league on Sunday morning and this turned out to be a cracking game. Both teams put on a real footballing show. However, in the end, it was the team in yellow that won 2-14 to 3-9.
This young Clonduff team played with commitment, passion and pride in their jersey. With two minutess to go, they were down by three points but raised their game to win by two points. Well done!!!
Panel: Conor Keenan, Noel Grant, Lorcan McAteer, Daragh O'Hanlon, Shane McGarry, Charlie Carr, Pierce Murnin, Michael Mulholland, Cara McPolin, Colm Fearon, Paudie Harper, Ryan McGreevy, Conor Murray, Conor Lowry, Eoin Ward, Finn Campbell, Thomas Kelly, Aaron O'Hagan and Brendan O'Hagan. (Report Jimmy Devlin)
Hurling
U16 HL - St. Pat's 1-8 Clonduff 3-10 Clonduff travelled to Ballyvarley on Tuesday to play St Pat's in the league. This was their first match since having a break for exams, yet nonetheless, the standard of Hurling was very high indeed. Clonduff played excellent hurling, the defence was solid through-out the game, and the score-taking in the forwards was brilliant. In the end, Clonduff ran out deserved winners! Team and Scorers: Christopher McShane, Shane Branagan, Eamonn Grant, Jamie Curran 0-1, Shea McPolin, Sean Downey, Shay Murnin 0-1, Conor Pio Gribben 0-1, Rian Branagan 1-7, Conor McShane, Pearce Branagan 1-0, Martin Rooney, Declan Rooney 1-0. Sub used: Lorcan Branagan. (Report Paddy Branagan)
Ladies Football
Senior Ladies - Clonduff had two games in the past week. They travelled to Saval on Tuesday evening to take on their forth-coming Championship semi final opponents though they were missing a number of key players. Clonduff lost on a score of 2-3 to 2-7 but both the team and the management, whilst disappointed with the result were happy with the performance, apart from the finishing. Clonduff enjoyed the lion's share of possession but shot 11 wides in the second half alone! However this is something that can be worked on in the next few weeks prior to meeting the same opposition in the Championship semi final in August. A very pleasing aspect was the performances of the younger players and the return of Karen Gribben who played the entire second half. Team: Elaine McCourt, Clodagh Nugent, Colleen McShane (Capt), Colleen McPolin, Leanne McParlan, Aoibheann Downey, Bridget Kearney, Fionnuala Carr, Kelly Carvill, Michael McConville, Onagh Gribben, Paula Gribben, Lisa Gribben, Lorraine Maginn. Subs used: Megan O'Reilly, Karen Gribben, Orla Gribben, Angeline McPolin, Christina McConville.
Annaclone v Clonduff - It was a short distance to travel to Annaclone on Saturday evening and following a minute's silence for young Daniel Andre the Yellas set out to prove a point (or two). Annaclone were awarded the points in the home fixture at the beginning of the season as they claimed they had been given insufficient notice that Clonduff wished to re-schedule the fixture. Clonduff were in rampant form and led 4-4 to 0-3 at the interval. The second half was an exhibition of point-taking with Clonduff firing over 11 points. The opposition may not have been the strongest but it provided the girls with the opportunity to hone their shooting skills in a game situation - their inability to convert their scores was the main cause of their defeat in last week's game. There were great performances all over the field and once again the young players coming through the ranks put down a marker and issued a warning to the established players. Final Score Annaclone 0-8 Clonduff 4-15. Team and scorers: Elaine McCourt, Clodagh Nugent, Leanne McParlan, Colleen McPolin, Karen Gribben, Aoibheann Downey, Janine Branagan, Michaela Downey(2-1), Kelly Carvill, Orla Gribben (0-1), Onagh Gribben, Paula Gribben (1-5), Hannah O'Reilly (0-3), Lorraine Maginn (1-2), Lisa Gribben (0-2). Subs: Michaella McConville (0-1), Paula Cairns, Jackie Gilmore.
U16 LFL - Bright v Clonduff - The Clonduff girls had a massive win away to Bright to Sunday morning and are firmly placed to challenge for League honours this year, having only dropped one game as have the other team in contention - it may come down to scoring difference but Clonduff have two games in hand.
