Parents and Players - Beware! Just a timely reminder to parents and indeed adult players also, that when buying new football boots, please avoid boots with 'blades' - they are responsible for many of the onfield injuries. This was brought home in no uncertain terms in a recent senior game - Burren v Clonduff. A Burren player attempted to turn - his upper body and knees did but his feet remained firmly in the ground! The player sustained a very severe knee injury which will keep him out for a very long time. We in Clonduff wish the player well and hope that no-one else suffers this type of injury for the sake of fashion! Clonduff Playing Uniform Everybody who plays for a Clonduff team at any level in Football, Hurling or Ladies Football, is reminded that they must wear the official uniform of the Club - Yellow Jersey, White Clonduff Shorts and Yellow Socks. Mentors will enforce this rule! A large quantity of club merchandise is now available for both adults and juveniles - jerseys, socks, shorts, rain jackets, hoodies, etc. Contact Club Chairman Brian McGreevy Clonduff and The Boley Fair It's almost that time of the year again! Campa Chormaic was founded in 2005 after the death of Tír Eoghain captain Cormac McAnallen. The main aim behind the camp is to stir the interest of the youth in the Irish language and Gaelic games. The intention is to nurture in the children the same passion for Gaelic culture and local history that Cormac had. The first Campa Chormaic outside Tyrone takes place in Castlewellan beginning on Monday 13 July and continuing until Friday 17 July, with classes beginning each day at 10 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. It will cater for children between 10 and 16 years of age. Further information and application forms can be obtained from Ryan Doyle, Rúnaí, Campa Chormaic An Dúin, 17 Doyle's Road, Katesbridge, Co. Down, BT32 5NL; or ring 07799474078, or visit www.campachormaic.com. 125 SPONSORED WALK - Sunday 12th July As part of the 125 celebrations the club's sponsored walk will take place this year to the Goward Dolmen on the Boley Fair Sunday (12th July) leaving the Clubrooms at 12.00. The walk will follow part of the old main road from Newry to Downpatrick turning up the lane at the Primary School, crossing the Old Clonduff Road and continuing along the lane out onto the Goward Road. The walkers will then follow the Goward Road to the Dolmen. Walkers can then relax at the Dolmen, have some refreshments and then proceed back onto the Goward Road where they can be picked up. Walkers can also 'dander' back to the club at their leisure if they so wish. The walk replaces the Fun Run which has taken place for a number of years. All mentors and players over the age of 10 are expected to take part in the walk. Parents of the younger players are welcome to take a sponsor card and accompany the children on the walk. Anyone else who would like to take part in the walk will also be most welcome. Sponsor cards will be issued to all teams this week. This is a good opportunity to visit one of our historic monuments and take the old route of one of the county's main roads. So get out with your children, enjoy a great walk, lovely scenery, visit a historic monument and raise much needed funds to develop our new pitch. All in all a good day is in store. Football Friday 19th June was a Big, Big Night for Clonduff Senior Footballers! They secured their first home win of the season when they beat Rostrevor 1-13 to 2-4 after a great performance from the whole team. They were hit with two goals, one in each half against the run of play. Gary pulled off a great save in the first half only for it to rebound to a Rostrevor man who palmed the ball into the net. In the second half they went a point down to a sucker goal after having all the play. However the team showed great character and quickly drew level and then went ahead - a lead they were not to lose. Arthur scored a great goal which put them five points up and they scored the last point of the evening for this momentous win, which is the boost the team needed. They have been playing well but have not got the results their efforts deserved. Team and scorers Gary Haughian, Paul McConville, Padraig Mathews, Francis Quinn, Rory Grant, Aidan Carr (0-1), John McPolin, Plunkett McConville (0-2), Mark McPolin, Paul McPolin, Arthur McConville (1-2), Eamon O'Reilly (0-1), Finbarr McConville (0-3), John Fegan (0-1), Shane Ward (0-3) Subs; Neil Trainor, Daniel McPolin, Gary McDonald, Stephen Brannigan, Paul McShane, Kieran Trainor, Noel McPolin. Best wishes to the two Rostrevor players who were injured during the game, Conor Daly had to be taken to hospital and Colm Clerkin was taken off very dazed after scoring Rostrevor's second goal. (Report Teresa Carr) PRFL - Clonduff II collected two valuable points in Ballymartin on Sunday 21st June. Clonduff played second fiddle to a strong Ballymartin team in the first half but raised their game in the second to win by four points. Unfortunately, there was a very poor show of players and this is not great preparation for the forthcoming Championship match against Downpatrick. Final score Ballymartin 2.09 Clonduff 3.10. Team and scorers: R McShane. P Farnon, J Killen, K Trainor (0.1), J Fegan, P Shields (0.1) ,N McPolin (1.1), S Branagan, B Branagan, G Curran, R Matthews (1.0), E Branagan (0.6), K Keatings (1.0), P Withnell (0.1), N Brown.. Sub C McGreevy. (Report Pat McParland) U16 FL - Clonduff 5-14 Warrenpoint 5-13 - Clonduff edged out league leaders Warrenpoint in a truly wonderful game of open and attacking football. Clonduff led by the brilliant Conor Grant, took the game to Warrenpoint and ensured there was little between the teams at half time Warrenpoint hit a purple patch at the start of the second half and opened up what looked to be a match winning 7 point lead, however the guts and determination from Pete Fitzpatrick, Rory Lively, Conor McShane, Ryan Brannigan and the unstoppable Barry O'Hagan ensured that Clonduff battled hard and ran out winners by the closest of margins. A great team effort. Clonduff panel: C P Gribben, S Murnin, E Grant, S Murnin, C Brown, R Lively, S Downey, R Grant, N McPolin, P Fitzpatrick, A Sherry, D Burns, R Brannigan, C McShane, B O'Hagan, J Curran and N Crowley (Report Paul Close) U14 FC - Clonduff v Burren (18/6/09) - Clonduff U14s are into the semi finals of the Championship. A comprehensive win over Burren ensures that a Championship win is still a reality. Playing with the wind Clonduff opened up a gap and by half time they were 2-10 to 1-2 up. Eight different players got on the score card which was very pleasing. 21 scores in total was excellent. As the whole team played very well there is no need to mention individuals. Just remember that the closer you get to the finals the harder the games become, so the training has to increase also! Team: Mark Devlin, Declan Gribben, Caolan McAvoy, Brendan Britton, Liam McAleavey, Conal Brown, Liam McGreevy (0-2), John Brown, Rory McQuaid (0-6), Darren Harper (1-2), Patrick O'Hagan (1-2), John McPolin (0-3), Jayme Gribben (0-1), Stephen McConville (0-1), Jack O'Hagan (1-1), Thomas Murnin, Colm Rooney, Niall O'Hare, Finbarr Greenan, Shane Milligan, Sean Murray, Michael Grant, Ryan Ward (Report Harry Brown) The U12 footballers had a good home win against Glenn on Sunday 21st June.. The team played some great football, showing real commitment and determination - an outstanding performance from Noel Grant in corner back. Well done boys! The final score was Clonduff 2-5 Glenn 0-4. (Report Jimmy Devlin) Hurling Clonduff Senior Hurlers had two games in the past week. On Monday night they defeated Warrenpoint in a very one-sided game in Clonduff Park. Clonduff scored 2-9 in the first half to Warrenpoint's 0-2 and with team management having an eye on the Ballycran game on Wednesday 17th this allowed them to play 20 players from the large panel. John Murphy, Kealim O'Hare and Fionnbharr Murphy were best on the night with 1-12 between them. Final score, Clonduff 2-16 Warrenpoint 0-6. On Wednesday night a youthful team were well beaten away by a strong St Josephs Ballycran, going down to a final score of Ballycran 4-11 Clonduff 1-3 Team/Panel, Niall Quinn, Paul Bloomfield, Damian Farnon (Capt), Danny Nugent, Shane Murray, Paul McCusker, Liam McParlan, Ciarán Smyth, Rory Matthews, Fionnbharr Murphy (0-5), John Murphy (1-3), Kealim O'Hare (0-4), Andrew Quinn, Jamie Lynch (0-2), Gary Smyth (1-0), Jim Murnin, Laurence Murphy, Chris Young (0-2), J J Gilmore, Mark Downey, Colin Brannigan, Paddy Murphy, Conor Tumilty. U16 HL - Ballyvarley v Clonduff - Clonduff: 3-10 St. Pat's: 1-8 Clonduff travelled to Ballyvarley to play St Pat's in the league. This was their first match since having a break for exams, yet nonetheless, the standard of Hurling was very high indeed. Clonduff played excellent hurling, the defense was solid through-out the game, and the score-taking in the forwards was brilliant. In the end, Clonduff ran out deserved winners! Team and Scorers: Christopher McShane, Shane Branagan, Eamonn Grant, Jamie Curran 0-1, Shea McPolin, Sean Downey, Shay Murnin 0-1, Conor Pio Gribben 0-1, Rian Branagan 1-7, Conor McShane, Pearce Branagan 1-0, Martin Rooney, Declan Rooney 1-0. Sub used: Lorcan Branaganthe league has resumed after the exam break. U14 HL - Carryduff v Clonduff - the youthful Clonduff side gave a good account of themselves but were unable to secure the win. U12 HL Clonduff v Ballela - the young Clonduff lads had a good win at home in the game played on Monday evening (postponed from Friday). Both clubs also took the opportunity to give their U10 players a game - Clonduff won that one also Camogie Best wishes to Aisling Hynes who married Brian Dickson on Saturday 20th June in St John's Ballymaghery! This was a quiet week on the playing fields; there was no senior game because of the county tam playing in the all Ireland championship. The county game was played at Clonduff Park on Saturday evening and resulted in a big win for Down, beating Dubln 4-16 to 0-0. There were five Clonduff girls in the team, Fionnuala Carr 1-03, Paul Gribben, Orla Maginn 0-1, Sara Louise Carr 0-3 and Lisa 1-00 McPolin. The junior team lost to An Riocht and the u 12's had a whopping 7-01 to 0-0 win over Warrenpoint. Ladies Football Clonduff Junior Ladies had no game on Saturday evening as their opponents were unable to travel - the game will be played at a later date. Next Junior game away to Teconnaught on Sunday 28th June. Senior Ladies - Clonduff Ladies travelled to Saval on Tuesday night short of a number of players including Michaela Downey, Christine Grimes, Jolene and Janine Branagan so management had the opportunity to try out other players and experiment with positions. Whilst Clonduff lost on a score of 2-3 to 2-7 both the team and the management, whilst disappointed with the result were happy with the performance, apart from the finishing. Clonduff enjoyed the lion's share of possession but shot 11 wides in the second half alone! However this is something that can be worked on in the next few weeks prior to meeting the same opposition in the Championship semi final in August. A very pleasing aspect was the performances of the younger players and the return of Karen Gribben who played the entire second half. Team: Elaine McCourt, Clodagh Nugent, Colleen McShane (Capt), Colleen McPolin, Leanne McParlan, Aoibheann Downey, Bridget Kearney, Fionnuala Carr, Kelly Carvill, Michael McConville, Onagh Gribben, Paula Gribben, Lisa Gribben, Lorraine Maginn.
