Kilclief take the points in Glasdrumman

June 22, 2009
Glasdrumman 1-11 Kilclief 2-10 Kilclief were the visitors to the Quarter Road on Friday in the final first round match of the season. Kilclief were first off the mark with a point on four minutes but Glasdrumman forced ahead with a point from Cormac Murphy after seven minutes followed almost immediately with a Martin McGrath point. Their lead was short lived though as the next Kilclief attack ended with the ball in the back of the Glasdrumman net. Cormac Murphy's second point came after seventeen minutes but Kilclief finished the half the stronger using the wind to their advantage with points after eighteen, twenty two and twenty seven minutes to leave the halftime score Glasdrumman 0-3 Kilclief 1-4. A Kilclief points after three minutes of play opened the scoring in the second half quickly followed by Glasdrumman points from Connaire Harrison and Cormac Murphy in a three minute spell. Glasdrumman were then hit with a hammer blow as a Kilclief shot hit the bottom edge of the crossbar and ended up in the net leaving six points between the sides. The Glasdrumman response was swift and sharp as Connaire Harrison pointed and then hit the back of the Kilclief net with a pile driver of a shot within two minutes of the Kilclief goal to leave only two points in the defecit. A quick Kilclief point after twelve minutes was cancelled out two minutes later when Connaire Harrison again pointed. Again Kilclief responded with a point on sixteen minutes before two Cormac Murphy points within three minutes of one another left only a point between the sides. Again Kilclief responded with a quick point and again Connaire Harrison cut the lead to a single point with three minutes left on the clock. A bit of frustration from the Glasdrumman attack saw two late tackles punished with two free kicks from where the ball landed which Kilclief converted in the final minutes before a James McDowell point in the last minute left the final score Glasdrumman 1-11 Kilclief 2-10. They say goals win games and this was certainly true in this case as this was a game that Glasdrumman could and should have won but the two Kilclief goals which came at crucial stages in the game left Glasdrumman always chasing the game rather than dictating the pace of the game. Glasdrumman: Ronan McDowell, Martin O'Neill, Francis O'Neill, Christopher Cassidy, Christopher McDowell, Brian Burns, Mark Trimble, Cormac Murphy (0-5), Colm Gribben, Martin McGrath (0-1), Raymond Clark, James McDowell (0-1), Raymond Magorrian, Colm Carr, Connaire Harrison, (1-4). Subs used: Darren Joyce for Colm Carr.
