RGU Notes
June 22, 2009
Downpatrick slumped to a deserved defeat when they served up their worst performance of the season against Attical on Friday past. Yes several players were missing from the line up but Attical were similarly afflicted but did just about enough to secure victory
There was a complete lack of drive in this performance despite the valiant efforts of Peter Telford, Ronan Foy, Damien Turley and John Connolly.
Unfortunately for Downpatrick the injury and unavailability list seems to have come all at once with key fixtures looming before the holiday period and Kyran Smyth and Danny Carville can only hope for the swift return to fitness of so many key players.
Next up on Friday is an away trip to Annaclone for the start of the second series of games
The reserves ran out three point victors on Sunday against high flying Saval to leave themselves sitting in the top half of the table but still somewhat adrift of table toppers Louhinisland who remain unbeaten.
The Under 16s bowed out of the championship on Wednesday despite dominating a game where they came upon and inspired goalkeeper who gave one of the best performances of the year at PTR. It is no exaggeration that . Rory Burns pulled off 10 top drawer saves to deny Downpatrick a place in the next round.
Allied to this was a last minute pile driver from Ryan Slevin that rebounded off a post and back into play.
This weeks the U 10s host another round of the East Down Go games with a series of games at PTR from 10.00 onwards and the U 12s go to An Riocht for the annual blitz.
After a 4 week break our u16 girls faced stiff opposition from a very strong Ballymartin side last week. Even with some brilliant play from Orla Boyle in defence and Orla Quinn on the forward line nothing could stop Ballymartin who were runaway winners. Training continues on Monday and Wednesday nights at 6.45.
Good luck to Kyla and the Down senior ladies for their championship match against Monaghan on Sunday.
Hard luck to Red High Corn Colm Cille team who lost out narrowly on Thursday past to St Mary CBS in the Ulster Final.
Despite some great passages of play they eventually went down by three points.
Prominent on the Red High squad, were Jonathan Deeny, Johnny Bell, Frank Starkey, Adam Prenter, Gareth Robinson Johnny Collins and Rory Bryce from RGU

Please note that Campa Cormaic will run at St. Malachy's High School this year between Monday 13 and Friday 17 July.
Campa Chormaic was founded in 2005 after the death of Tír Eoghain captain Cormac on 2 March 2004. The main aim behind the camp is to stir the interest of the youth in the areas surrounding Cormac's homeplace, in the Irish language and Gaelic games. The intention is to nurture in the children the same passion for Gaelic culture and local history that Cormac had. In its four years in Tír Eoghain the Camp has gone from strength to strength.
This is the first county outside of Tír Eoghain to set up a branch of Campa Chormaic, and this looks a fantastic opportunity for children of between 10 & 16 years of age
