Donegal duo axed

July 02, 2009

Antrim's Niall McKeever with Neil Gallagher of Donegal during the Ulster SFC quarter-final
Ciaran Bonner and Neil Gallagher have been axed from the Donegal football panel for a breach of discipline. Manager John Joe Doherty has dropped the pair ahead of Saturday's All-Ireland qualifier against Carlow in Ballybofey. Doherty would not elaborate on the matter, other than to confirm that they had been dropped for disciplinary reasons. Indiscipline has dogged Donegal's championship campaigns in recent years, and after their shock Ulster SFC exit at the hands of Antrim last month, this latest setback will hamper their ability to revive their season. Both players lined out against Antrim, and while midfielder Gallagher was struggling with a hamstring injury he sustained in a recent club game with Glenswilly and was rated as a major doubt for Saturday's game, Bonner was expected to start. 2009 has proven to be a hugely frustrating year for former National League winning captain Gallagher, who only recently returned to action after a shoulder injury had ruled him out of most of the NFL campaign.
