Carlow fuming after request is thrown out

June 30, 2009
Carlow chairman Pat Deering has blasted the CCCC for refusing to bring forward the starting time of Saturday's All-Ireland football qualifier against Donegal. Despite requesting a 3pm throw-in due to the 600km-plus round trip involved, Carlow have been told that the first round qualifier in Ballybofey will go ahead as scheduled at 7pm. An angry Deering explained that the GAA turned down the request on the basis that Ballybofey is crowded with shoppers on a Saturday afternoon. "We're very disappointed by the way we've been treated," he said. "Especially, the excuse they gave us. They said that Ballybofey is a provincial shopping town and would be very busy on a Saturday afternoon." The GAA's refusal to bring forward the throw-in time means that the Carlow players and supporters won't arrive home until the early hours of Sunday morning.
