Inishowen GAA club notes

June 30, 2009
Buncrana Buncrana GAA Club would like to offer their sincere condolences to John Friel and family, Urris, on the death of his mother. Buncrana GAA Fun Camp for 6 to 14 year olds is just one month away now. It will be held in the Scarvey from Monday to Friday the third to seventh of August from 10.30am to 3pm. This year's camp will include a range of activities designed to stimulate learning, teamwork and skills for children in this age group. Places can be booked now by emailing [email protected] or by calling Paul on 087 929 3134. Lottos are currently being sold to homes throughout the parish, all sellers will be wearing authorisation cards. The club would like to thank all those who purchased lottos which will help fund various club activities from U8 football and hurling to adult levels. GAA fans in Inishowen can read an interesting article in July's edition of Oakleaf Magazine entitled "When Donegal ruled Derry" which details Burt's hurling exploits in the Derry Senior Hurling Championship in the distant past, including allegations of "unsportsmanship"! The magazine can be bought in Eason's, Derry. The u10 footballers had a fine win against Newtown in the northern board finals on Saturday. Playing Newtown in both Section 2 and 4 finals in the Buncrana boys won both games. This was a very enjoyable day for players and spectators with some fine football skills on display. A special word of praise must go to the players' mothers who provided refreshments for all the teams and supporters. There will be a blitz for this side on Saturday in Malin leaving the pitch at 10 am all parents are encouraged to come along and support the future stars. The u14 footballers played hosts to Dromintee from Armagh in a highly entertaining friendly on Saturday, the lads gave a good account of themselves against a good orchard county side. On the hurling front the u14 hurlers booked their place in the championship final with a fine win over local rivals Burt. The lads put on a fine display of skill all the desire to win, playing in front of the loyal band of travelling support they ran out comfortable winners 3:12 to 0:2 they play Ballyshannon in the final on date to be confirmed. This group of boys had the added bonus on Sunday evening when no less than seven of this team were named in the 30 strong Donegal development panel who will travel to play in Croke Park on Tuesday, this is a massive boost for hurling development in the club, congratulations to Daniel Wilson, Stephen Nelson, Michael Farrell, Donal Mac Lochlainn, Jack O'Loughlin, John Campbell the club also have added honour of having Conor Grant as Captain of the team. The U10 hurlers fielded two teams in the blitz in Burt on Sunday, and this side played nine games winning 8 and drawing just one. This particular side are a fine bunch and remain unbeaten this year. Congratulations to Patrick Wilson who played at halftime in the Ulster hurling final. Burt The U12 footballers were denied a place in the Donegal Division 1 championship final last Monday evening in Newtown after losing 2-10 to 1-11 to defending champions St Eunan's. It was U12s first defeat since the middle of last year, and in the end the result came down to a matter of inches. After St Eunan's took the lead with a goal with five minutes remaining, Burt battled back to create chances and level the game. In literally the final seconds of the match, Burt hit the underside of the crossbar which was followed by the sound of the final whistle. Despite the defeat, it was Burt's best performance of the year so far, with everyone exceptional from the goalkeeper to the subs that came on. Many congratulations to St Eunan's on reaching the final and it was great to see a tough, skilful display from two good footballing sides. The GAA Cúl camp is in Burt from next Monday 6 to Friday 10 July. Cost is 65 per child, with each additional family member 50. Contact Damian Dowds for details on 087 7811072. Anybody who has filled out forms with payment should give it to a club member as soon as possible or any of the underage coaches. The U12 Blue team face Urris tonight, Tuesday 30 June, in Buncrana at 6.30pm. The Bus leaves the pitch at 5.30pm and then onto Burnfoot and the Halfway. Good luck to everyone involved. The U12 blue and gold team both won their games against Malin last Tuesday night. The Gold side should learn their opponents for the Inishowen B semi-final in the coming week. For updates on club under-age activities, log onto www.twitter.com/dowdsie. The U16 footballers play Carn in the Inishowen B final on Tuesday night, after the U12 game in Buncrana. Best of luck to the team. The Burt GAA Club and all its members extend their condolences to CLG Iorras and all the family and friends of Annie Friel, Urris who passed away last week. The senior hurlers travelled to Ballyshannon last Wednesday where they beat a poor Aodh Ruadh outfit 0-32 to 0-8. On Sunday they made the long trip to Lisbellaw in the Ulster league. Without a good number of players, where they were beaten 5-12 to 1-13. That defeat means Burt miss out on reaching the Ulster league semi-finals. Players will be notified of training when all fixtures are confirmed for this coming week. The U14 footballers played Malin twice last week in the Northern Board league and the Inishowen league. Both games were tight affairs with Burt winning both; 1-11 to 1-8 in the NB league and 1-13 to 2-8 in the Inishowen league. This Friday they play home Carn in the Inishowen league. Burt were beat by a good Buncrana side in the U-14 Donegal hurling championship semi-final last Thursday evening. It was a poor performance from the Burt boys but as always they will bounce back and prepare again for next year. The U14 girls football side were beat by Carndonagh 5-3 to 2-3 last Thursday in the Donegal league in Foden. Despite a number of players missing, they put in a great performance. This Thursday they are away to Muff. Convoy beat the minor footballers in the NB league last Friday by two points, 3-15 to 6-4. There was no winner of the lotto jackpot last week. Mary Campbell, Burt won 40. The numbers drawn were 5,3,1,7,6,2,4. Next week's jackpot is 1900. Anyone with lottos should have them in the clubhouse by Thursday night at 8.15 pm or hand it to any club member. Congratulations to Georgie Kelly, Jamie Barr and Jonathan Devlin who have been selected for the Donegal U14 panel who are in Croke Park today, Tuesday, playing in an Ulster U14 blitz. An U10 football blitz is on this Saturday in Moville with throw-in at 11am. All players and parents will be notified of arrangements beforehand. Underage training continues for U12 and U14 players on Saturday morning, from 10.30am to 12noon. Congratulations to the Donegal senior hurlers who will play Tyrone in the Lory Meagher cup final in Croke Park on Saturday, 11 July. As a treat, throw-in for the All-Ireland final is on at the ungodly hour of 12 noon. Commiserations to our U14 camogie team who lost narrowly to Castleblaney in the Ulster Community Games final. The girls had been seeking their third title in a row. Congratulations to Denver Kelly and Charles McDaid who won silver at the National Athletics championships in Tipperary on Saturday. Congratulations also to Ryan Doherty (Goose) who played at half-time during the Ulster senior hurling final between Antrim and Down on Sunday. And finally congratulations to the U12 Aileach team who won the Inishowen Division 1 league on Sunday. Underage hurling training is on every Monday from 6.30pm to 7.45pm for U8s up to U12s and the U14 camogie team. Everybody must bring 1 for training and everyone is reminded to bring helmets and other equipment. All underage players must arrive at pitch for 6.25pm. Carndonagh The seniors had no game last weekend. Training continues as usual on Monday and Thursday evenings. Carn minors progressed to the final of the Inishowen minor competition when they defeated Malin in Foden last Thursday evening. An injury to Eanna Newton in the first few minutes of the game put a dampener on the game. However both teams went on to gave the spectators plenty to cheer about as they battled for possession and scores, at half time they were level. In the second period, Carn, despite some wayward passing managed to create more chances and finished the game four points ahead. The club wishes Eanna a speedy recovery. The U10 hurlers travelled to Burt on Sunday morning to compete in the monthly blitz. Once again it was very successful with the boys getting four games of hurling. On Friday evening the U12 camogie girls travelled to Letterkenny for the first U12 blitz. It was disappointing in that a number of the players failed to show on the evening. It was a successful evening with games taking place and was enjoyed by those that attended. All girls are asked to attend training on Wednesday afternoon from 4.30 to 5.30pm. The U14 camogie girls continue to play in the Derry League and play Na Magha at the Templemore Sports complex this Tuesday evening. The U12 and U16 hurling league begins on Thursday 9 July with the U12 hurlers playing Burt in Foden and the U16 hurlers travel to Burt. All games are fixed for 7.30pm. Congratulations and good luck to Conor McCormick and Danny Monagle who are part of the Donegal U14 hurling development squad who travel to Croke Park this Tuesday to play in a blitz. There is no doubt that this is a great experience for the boys. The GAA summer camp takes place in Foden from July 13-17 July. The GAA hurling/camogie only camp takes place from 17-21 August. All outstanding forms should be returned to the coaches at the training sessions or matches this week. The U14 girls football team played Burt last Thursday evening. It was their last game in the league and they had to win to have a chance of going through to the next round. Although missing a few players, Carn put in a full team effort with defenders working the ball out to midfield and supporting the forwards in getting the scores. Carn led by 2-1 to 0-2 at half time. Burt came out strong in the second half and soon scored their first goal and tried hard for more but the defence were strong especially Kerry Doherty who seemed to be there to tidy up all the loose balls. It was a tough battle for most of the second half but Carn came out on top with 5-2 to Burt's 2-3, and the Carn girls were glad to hear the final whistle. Scorers for Carn were: Cliodhna Canny three goals, a goal each for Louise and Simone McLaughlin and a point each for Simone and Trudi McLaughlin. It was a team effort but the younger members on the team stood out this week, they put in some good tackles, and were not afraid to put in a block on the ball, these girls were Kellie McLaughlin, Aislinn Gibbons, Aisling McLaughlin, Emily Molyneaux and Danielle Diver. The girls will have to wait until all the clubs have finished their games to know whether we have enough points to get into the County B Semi final or perhaps have a playoff with another club to qualify. Training will continue on Tuesdays at 6.30pm and Saturdays at 11am and for some they may be playing for the U16 girl's team and would need to be attending one of the training sessions each week. Carn defeated Urris by 4-8 to 3-3 in the U12A league last Monday night. See match report on page 58. They play Naomh Pádraig tonight, Tuesday, in the Inishowen semi-final in Malin. The match throws in at 7.45pm. The winning numbers in the club mini-lotto were 6, 19, 16, 20 and 21. There was no jackpot winner. The 75 Euro went to Margaret Crossan, Ard Colgan, Carn. 30 to Keelan Doherty, 15 Clos Padraig, Carn. 15 to Anne Marie Duffy, Isle of Doagh, Kathleen Doherty (Hela), Quigley's Point and Kathleen Doherty, 66 Ard Colgan, Carn. The jackpot next week is 5,000 and the draw will be held in the Sportsman's. Malin The senior side won their first away game in the 2009 league campaign on Sunday, defeating St Naul's in Mountcharles by 3-11 to 1-9. St Naul's had led by five points to one before Malin took control to run out comfortable winners, goals from Michael Doherty (2) and Conor Farren helping them on their way. Malin now have eight points from eight games with half the season completed, should they collect the same from the second half of the season then they should not be far away from a promotion place. The reserves were defeated in their game against St Naul's. The Junior B side recorded a good win over Ardara on Saturday evening in Division 5 of the All County League. The minors were defeated by Carndonagh in the Inishowen semi-final on Thursday evening while the U12 A and B sides both lost to Burt at home on Tuesday evening. The club wishes a speedy recovery to U-12 player Tomas McLaughlin (Fildara) who broke his arm recently. The club are holding a sports day on Sunday 9 August with proceeds going to Duchene Muscular Dystrophy, more details to follow. U8 training on Sunday mornings has stopped for the summer and will resume when the schools re-open. Gym membership is now available at 100 per year per person or 170 for family membership. Anyone wanting to join the gym must do an induction with Charlie Byrne, Charlie can be contacted on 087 4103782. This year's VHI summer camp takes place in Malin from Monday 20-Friday 24 July. This is an enjoyable week for children aged 7 to 13 years old, boys and girls. It consists of 4 days coaching with coaches from all over the county and a sports day on the Friday where each child will receive their kit and bag. The cost for the week is 65 for the first child and 50 for each additional child in a family while a bus will be available throughout the parish. For application forms and further information contact Maria McLaughlin on 087 7763679. There was no winner of this week's lotto jackpot. The sequence drawn was 6, 4, 3, 1, 2, 7, 5. Tony "Tinney" Doherty Buncrana, won the 50 prize with the 20 sellers prize going to Seamus Doherty, Malin Head. Next week's jackpot is 1,450 and we thank the local community for their continued support. Finally, he'll not thank me for mentioning it but birthday wishes to big Liam O'Neill who turned 40 last week. He had a smashing time apparently, then again not the first time someone collided with Liam and came off worst! Moville Both the senior ladies and men's teams had important wins at the weekend. The ladies started their defence of their county title with a victory over last year's runners up Glenfin in sun drenched Carrick on Sunday afternoon. Moville built up a commanding lead but let the visitors back into the game in the second half but still ran out convincing winners with fine displays from Leonie Furlong, Niamh Hegarty and Anita Doherty. Moville now progress to play the winners of Termon v St Michael's in the semi final. The men's senior team travelled to league leaders Lifford on Sunday in a top of the table battle. The first half was a nip and tuck affair with Moville holding the upper hand at half time leading by 0-6 to 0-4. In the second half Moville gave their finest display of the season as they tore Lifford apart. Malachy McDermott with a return of 1-7 was the star for Moville, but the whole defensive unit of Enda Faulkner, Gearoid McQuillan, Tony McGeady, Conor O'Donnell and Seamus and Anton Hegarty put in many fine blocks and tackles to thwart the Lifford attacks as Moville ran out convincing winners on a score of 1-17 to 0-6. The reserve team went down to a strong Lifford side. The U14 girls also recorded a good win during the week as they overcame Urris with good displays from Kathy McLaughlin and Alana Furlong. The minor team play in the Inishowen final on Thursday evening against Carndonagh. The game is in Malin with a 7.30pm throw in. The annual GAA Cúl camp will take place in Carrick from 20-24 July. This is a great chance for the boys and girls to really prove that they are a better team than their recent results have shown, if everyone plays to their potential and makes the effort on the night a shock result could be achieved. The U14 boys will travel to Newtown to take on Naomh Colmcille in the Northern Board league on Wednesday night, the bus will leave from Straid at 6.15pm. The match will throw in at 7.30pm.
