Inishowen GAA club notes

June 23, 2009
Buncrana Buncrana Senior Footballers topped league Division 2 at the weekend by beating Naomh Mhuire at home on a scoreline of 1-10 to 1-4. Buncrana have 12 points from 9 games, Aodh Ruadh Ballyshannon follow close behind with 11 points from 8 games while Gaoth Dobhair have 9 points from 6 games. The reserve footballers also had a good win over Naomh Mhuire on a scoreline of 3-8 to 1-6. Gary Duffy helped secure victory with a spectacular goal that was right out of the top drawer. Buncrana footballers are away to Termon next Sunday 28 June. Hurling fixtures have not yet been released. The next meeting of the Club Executive Board will be on Wednesday 1 July at 8pm in the Scarvey. The U14 hurlers returned empty handed from the Féile na nGael finals in Laois/Offaly. The boys lost their first match against the host club Killeigh by three points on Friday night. On Saturday they played Clara and again lost by two points in a great game of hurling. They played a strong Roscommon side in the last game and lost heavily. The Roscommon side contested the Divisional final and only lost to a last minute goal. Although no matches were won many friendships and memories were made. Great credit must go to the Na Fianna GAA club from Killeigh in County Offaly who hosted the boys. The lads were a credit to the club, themselves, and their parents. The club would like to thank all who helped to organise, fundraise and supported the trip. A big thank you also goes to the parents who travelled to Offaly in such large numbers and they all must remember 'What happened in Offaly stays in Offaly'! The U14s must now regroup as they play Burt on Thursday night in the championship. The recent good run our U12 footballers were on came to an end in Burt on Tuesday night. The boys competed well and although losing they continue to show great signs of improvement. An injury to Andrew Doherty didn't help the cause and we hope he makes a quick recovery. Congratulations to the U16 Footballers who claimed the Inishowen title on Saturday evening. Lawrence and Noel will be justly proud of their efforts. Burt Congratulations to the U14 camogie team that travelled to Offaly for the national Féile na nGael finals. It was a great weekend for the girls, who did extremely well to win two out of their three matches. Perhaps their long journey on Friday morning did not favour them for their first game against St Sinchill's Killeigh, which they lost by 5-2 to 2-1. However they won both their games on Saturday against Killeigh's neighbours St Manman's Clonaslee and Laois side St Kevin's, 3-2 to 1-0 and 2-2 to 2-0 respectively. It was a good trip for the girls and they'll look forward to next year with only a couple of players from this year's side over age. Many thanks to the coaches, mentors and parents who accompanied the team at the weekend. The squad was: Charlotte Gill, Michaela Doherty, Michaela Robinson, Denise McLaughlin, Deirdre Doherty, Shauna McGrory, Niamh Devlin, Olivia Devlin, Paula McGrory, Chloe Doherty, Roisin Clougherty, Leanne Kelly, Karen Kelly, Danielle Kelly, Niamh Ward, Majella Bradley, Deirdre Doherty and Aoife McMonagle. The annual Summer Camp is in Burt from Monday 6 to Friday 10 July. Cost is 65 per child, with each additional family member 50. Email Damian Dowds for details. Anybody who has filled out forms with payment should hand it back to their school before it ends for the summer, or a club member, as soon as possible. Well done to St Mura's NS on winning the double last Wednesday in hurling and camogie in the Mini-sevens and National schools finals. Congratulations to Georgie Kelly and Niamh Devlin on their selection for the Mini-sevens team that will play at half time during the All-Ireland hurling final on 6 September. Well done also to Jamie Barr and Karen Kelly who will play in the All-Ireland semi-final on 9 August after impressing at the Mini-sevens. The senior hurlers may have an Ulster Senior league clash this Wednesday against Lisbellaw. Players will be notified beforehand of details. If not, training as usual. Senior football training is on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The U12 footballers are away to Malin tonight (Tuesday 23 June) in the Inishowen league. Players and parents will be notified of arrangements as usual. Last week the Blue and Gold teams played Buncrana at home. The Gold team drew 0-6 to 1-3 and the Blue team won 5-7 to 1-8. For updates on club under-age activities, log onto www.twitter.com/dowdsie. There was no winner of the lotto jackpot last week. Ciara Callaghan, Monglass and Mark McGavigan, Burt won 20 each. The numbers drawn were 2, 4, 3, 6, 5, 1, 7. Next week's jackpot is 1,850. Anyone with lottos should have them in the clubhouse by Thursday night at 8.15 pm or hand it to any club member. Oak Leaf Magazine, a monthly publication dedicated to Derry GAA, has an article this month on Burt and the club's success in Derry GAA in the 1930s. The magazine is available in many shops throughout Derry city and in the main shopping centres and bookstores. The U12 hurlers went to a blitz on Sunday afternoon, held in O'Donnell Park. It was a good run out for the young hurlers and gave our U10s a good run-out too with many of the side resting for last night's football championship semi-final against St Eunan's. The U16 footballers play Moville tonight in the Inishowen B semi-final in Muff. The U14 footballers play Malin this Wednesday night in the Northern Board league at home and they're away to the same opposition on Friday night in the Inishowen League. The U14 hurlers then play Buncrana on the Thursday evening in the county semi-final. Carn The senior and reserve footballers travelled to Falcarragh last Sunday to play Cloughaneely. In the reserve game the home side started the brighter and had scored two easy goals in the first ten minutes. On the 18 minute Richard Cunningham scored a great goal to leave only two points in the difference. Unfortunately for the visitors this was to be the last score for them in the first half and the home side scored three frees and a goal on the stroke of half time to leave the score 3-6 to 1-4 in their favour. In the second half fortune for the visitors did not change with another goal being conceded and the final score was Cloughaneely 4-11 Carn 1-9. The Carn team was Shane Gibbons, Paul Canny, Shane Donaghey, Shane Hartin, William Mooney, Brian Long, Tiarnan Coyne, Sean McLaughlin, Richard Cunningham, Shane Doherty (G), Kevin Kelly, Niall McLaughlin, Steven Doherty, Daniel McLaughlin, Eamonn McColgan, Shane Devlin, George McGuinness and Diarmaid Gallagher. In the senior match the home side recorded a number of wides before the visitors opened the scoring with a point from Darren Burke. The home side drew level with a free but once again Darren put the visitors ahead. Cloughaneely then took a two point lead but again Burke left a point between the sides with the home side scoring before the interval to left the half score 0-5 to 0-3 in their favour. Carn opened the scoring of the second half with another point from Burke. Cloughaneely scored from a free and again Carn responded with two points one from play and a free all from the boot of Burke. With the game now level Rory Ward scored a goal for the visitors. Both teams once again exchanged points but the home side seemed to have that extra energy and scored a further four points without reply to won by a single point. This was a very physical game and with the exception of the last ten minutes Carn can take a lot of positives from this away match. The team was Dermot Doherty, Benny Doherty, Dominic Doherty, Aidan O Callaghan, Michael Nelson, Patrick Nelson, Ronan O Connor, Cathal Doherty, Gerard Doherty, Ryan Davenport, Cathal O Kane, Rory Ward, Kevin Doherty (L), Darren Burke, Padraig Doherty, Darragh McLaughlin and Liam Shiels. The U14 boys drew with Naomh Colmcille in the opening round of the Northern Board League 1-8 to 2-5, and defeated Malin 2-10 to 2-3 in the Inishowen League. See reports on page 56. The U12s qualified for the Inishowen semi-finals following their 1-12 to 1-7 victory over Malin last week. See report on page 56. Congratulations to all the boys and girls for qualifying and let's hope we can go all the way. The U14 girls played Muff last Thursday evening, this was their second meeting of the season. With the wind in their favour Carn started well with a goal from Cliodhna Canny in the first ten minutes but Muff hit back with two quick points and a goal. Carn had to settle down and were soon rewarded with another goal. Muff came back again with a point and soon followed with a goal but the hard work of Rebecca Lynch, Lauren Moore and Amy Norris paid off and the Carn girls got two more goals and two points before half time. Muff came out strong in the second half and with the wind behind them they scored first. The Carn defence was tested strongly but good play from Claire O'Connor, Kerry Doherty and Emma Canny helped to get the ball out wide to Trudi and Simone McLaughlin who continued to work tirelessly to win possession. After a goalmouth scramble Shannen McBride scored a goal giving Carn a bit of breathing space however Muff came back with a goal and again the battle was on. There was a tough battle for possession right to the end and both teams scored again but the game finished a draw. Carndonagh have one more game to play in this competition and need to win if they are to have enough points to go through to a county B Semi Final. The next game should take place in the coming weeks and all support is welcome. Training as usual Tuesday 6.30pm and Saturday 11pm. An U10 camogie blitz took place in Pairc Uí Dhochartaigh last Friday night. Three clubs took part St Eunan's, Burt and the host club. Four teams were fielded with a total of six games being played. Despite the inclement weather all the girls played well with the host club proving the stronger on this occasion. This Friday evening St Eunan's host a U/12 Camogie blitz. The Carn players will get further details from their coaches at training on Wednesday evening. Last weekend the U/8 hurlers took part in the second outdoor blitz of the season at the Letterkenny Gaels Club. The Carn hurlers once again competed well and are showing vast improvement. The club wish to thank all the parents that travelled and arranged transport for the players on the day. The U/8 hurlers continue to train on a Tuesday evening 5.30 to 6.30pm. On Sunday last the U/12 hurlers played their first outdoor blitz of the season in O'Donnell Park, Lettereknny. Due to other activities on this occasion a number of the experienced players were unavailable and results did not go Carn's way. With all players available they can look forward to the league which will get under way in July. Training for the U12s continues on a Thursday evening at 6pm. On a positive note it was great to see local school games taking place last week in both hurling and camogie. All agree that with the provision of more local games the game of hurling will continue to flourish. On this Tuesday night at 9.15pm a meeting of all hurling coaches will take place in the clubrooms to develop a plan of coaching for beginners to minors. The winning numbers in the club mini lotto were 16, 21, 5, 18 and 4. There was no jackpot winner. The 75 went to Mary Farren (P), Pound Street, Carn. 30 to Ella Bonner, Culdaff. 15 to Shane Kelly, Millbrae, Carn, M. Henderson, Churchtown, Carn and Patrick Nelson, Ballybeg, Carn. The jackpot next week is 4,900 and the draw will be held in the Persian Bar. Malin The senior's trip to Termon in Division 2 ended in disappointment with Termon winning comfortably enough. The U16s lost the Inishowen final by three points to Buncrana, 0-15 to 2-6. Malin were a point behind at the break but were unable to build on this in the second half although they were unlucky to see a couple of shots go narrowly wide of goal, as it was, they gave a good account of themselves. Well done to Buncrana on their win. The ladies match against Muff was cancelled with the visitors unable to field. The U12 side were defeated in the county semi-final by Glenswilly, 2-12 to 2-11, although they did well to come back from being 11 points behind at half time. The U14s lost away to Carndonagh by 2-11 to 2-05, Declan Farren hitting 2-3 of Malin's total, Tommy Byrne and Charlie Scott also doing well. U8 training on Sunday mornings has stopped for the summer and will resume when the schools re-open. Gym membership is now available at 100 per year per person or 170 for family membership. Anyone wanting to join the gym must do an induction with Charlie Byrne, Charlie can be contacted on 087 4103782. This year's VHI summer camp takes place in Malin from Monday 20-Friday 24 July. This is an enjoyable week for children aged 7 to 13 years old, boys and girls. It consists of 4 days coaching with coaches from all over the county and a sports day on the Friday where each child will receive their kit and bag. The cost for the week is 65 for the first child and 50 for each additional child in a family while a bus will be available throughout the parish. For application forms and further information contact Maria McLaughlin on 087 7763679. There was no winner of this week's lotto jackpot. The sequence drawn was 1, 6, 4, 3, 5, 7, 2. Susan Byrne, Beaugh, won the 50 prize with the 20 sellers prize going to Conor Byrne, Beaugh. Next week's jackpot is 1,350 and we thank the local community for their continued support. Moville Last weekend saw the opening games in the Junior and Junior B Championships take place. In the Junior Championship Moville travelled to Convoy for the first leg. There was little between the sides in the first half but greater economy in front of the posts saw the home side go in at the break leading by 0-5 to 0-3. Although dominating possession and drawing level at 0-5 apiece the Moville forwards were having an off day. With ten minutes remaining Convoy got the all important goal to take a three point advantage. A couple of positional changes and inspirational points from Odhran McDermott and John Faulkner left the minimum between the sides as injury time loomed. With the seconds ticking away Eunan Hegarty found himself on a one and one with the Convoy keeper and he hit a blistering shot to the top of the net to snatch an important victory for Moville. The reserve team made the long journey to Glenties and lost out to the home side. The reserves will be hopeful of reversing the result in the return leg in Moville in four weeks time. Best for the reserves were James O'Kane, Michael Fiorentini and Mathew Henry. This Sunday it is the turn of the senior ladies as they start the defence of their crown with a home game against last year's beaten finalists Glenfin. The game has a 12 noon throw in Carrick. On Tuesday the U16s take on Burt in Muff in the B semi final. The annual GAA Cúl camp will take place in Carrick from the 20-24 July. The cost is 65 for the first child and 50 for any subsequent child. Application forms and enquiries should be made to club youth officer Heather Norris, tel 086 8365656 or 9382052. U10 training continues this Saturday in Carrick at the usual time. Girls underage training for all age groups takes place every Monday at 6pm. There is a wide selection of club gear available from treasurer Bridget Harkin, including hoodies, jackets, replica jerseys, socks, shorts, and bags. There is a reduction on the price adult polo shirts to 30 when stocks last. The annual golf classic at Greencastle golf club was a great success with over 50 teams participating. Our sincere thanks to all teams and sponsors for a very successful day. The team of Paul Houston, Philip Devlin, Ciaran O'Neill and Brian Doherty captured the first prize. Naomh Colmcille Our Reserves travelled away to play Naomh Padraig Lifford on Sunday last in the first round of the Championship and came away with a very well deserved hard fought draw. See report and photos on the website. Training continues every Tuesday and Thursday at 8pm sharp. All new players very welcome. Our U8 & U10 teams travelled to Letterkenny for the St Eunan's blitz on Saturday last with all teams doing very well. The U14s played last week at home to Carndonagh in a game that ended in a draw after a great second half comeback by the home team. More play like this in the next couple of months will see this side win its fair share of games. No game this week, training session on Wednesday at 6.30pm. The U16s have an All County Division 3 final on Sunday next against Naomh Columba venue and time to be confirmed. All players need to attend training this Wednesday at 6.30pm. The minors are in action on Friday night at home to Termon at 7.30pm. Naomh Colmcille are hosting supervised disco for age 8-12 years old with DJ Raymond starting from Friday 3 July between 7-9pm. Naomh Colmcille are hosting a VHI Cúl Camp this summer from 20-24 July. The camp is for children aged 7 to 13 years. The aim of the camp is to help children develop sporting and life skills by participating in Gaelic Games in a fun, non-competitive environment. Each participant receives a football jersey, shorts, socks and kit bag. The camp was held at home last year and was thoroughly enjoyed by a large number of young children. To reserve a place on the Cúl Camp, phone Sharon Monaghan on 087 9685558 as soon as possible. The cost is 65 for the first child and 50 for subsequent children from the same family. Naomh Pádraig The numbers drawn in last weeks lotto draw were 1, 4, 5, 6, 3, 7 and 2. There was no jackpot winner however 2 runner-up prizes of 50 went to Michael McCallion, C/o Rock Bar and Trevor McLaughlin, Craig, Muff. The club would like to thank everyone who attended and assisted in any way with the Sports Day at the weekend. The Seniors took on Milford on Sunday past in the first leg of the Junior Championship however fell to a disappointing six point defeat. Naomh Pádraig never got their game going and went in 7 points down at half-time. A Mark Duffy goal mid way through the second half and an Aidan Lynch point saw the visitors fight back to within one point however Naomh Pádraig struggled to find the equaliser and Milford hit back with a late goal to give them victory on a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-6. Training continues midweek on Tuesday and Thursday. The Seniors are scheduled to host Naomh Ultan at Ture next Saturday evening. The U12s visit Moville in the Inishowen league on Tuesday evening with the games throwing in at 6.15pm and 7.00pm. Urris The long trip to Fanad Gaels last Saturday evening proved fruitless for the Seniors who got beaten by the probable division winners. The Reserves got a draw from their game so the trip wasn't entirely wasted. Next week's matches haven't been fixed yet but the matches will probably be played on Sunday. As usual the lads should check with John at training for next week's fixtures. There will be a Club meeting at 9pm on Wednesday evening; all members are asked to do their best to attend. A manager is needed still for the boy's U13 team and help is also required with the U10s on a weekly basis. If you are interested in giving a hand please let David or Paul know as soon as possible. Anyone who wants to order a hoody, rain jacket or one of the new polo shirts can give their order to Paul. Orders must be in by Friday and must be paid for in full. Outstanding orders should be collected as soon as possible. This year's Summer Camp will run from Monday July 6 until Friday July 10 inclusive, cost of the camp remains the same as last year with the first child in a family costing 65 and 50 per chil d thereafter. Places can be booked by contacting John Friel or David Hession. The U12 boys will play twice this week firstly against Carn on Monday evening and then for their final league match they travel to Muff on Wednesday evening. The bus will leave from Straid at 5.15pm. Both the 'A' and 'B' teams will be travelling with the 'B' match throwing in at 6.15pm and the 'A' match at 7pm. Next week will see the league semi-finals on Tuesday evening and the results of this week's games will decide who the team will be pitted against. The U14 boys had an easy win over Muff last Friday despite being badly understrength and then beat Malin on Sunday to cap off a good week for the team. This week the lads will take on our near neighbours Carndonagh twice in three days; firstly on Wednesday evening in a Northern Board match this being played in Foden, the bus will leave from Straid at 6.40pm with the match throwing in at 7.30pm. On Friday the two teams will meet again in the Inishowen League this time in Straid, this match will start at 7pm. The lads should check with Paul if they have any questions. The U16 boys will play Carndonagh in the 'B' semi-final on tonight, Tuesday, at 7.45pm in Muff. Adrian will be in contact with the boys about training and travel arrangements in the meantime. There is still no word on the U12 girl's next match but David will let the girls know as soon as he finds out. There will be training for the team this week on Friday evening from 5pm to 6pm. All the girls are asked to make the effort to attend; David will probably have news about the semi-final then. The U16 girls will train on Thursday evening at 6pm, it is very important that all the girls do their best to attend the session; John will have details of fixtures at training. The U14 girl's will play Moville and Muff this week in their league and will be hopeful of picking up a couple of wins to boost their chances of moving onto the next round of the competition. The girls should contact Paul if they are unsure of arrangements. The U10's will be in action on Saturday morning, 10-11.30am, the match against Malin who were unable to make it to Straid last weekend has been re-arranged for this Saturday. The second blitz of the season has been put back a week or two but David should have details for the children at training. If parents or children have any questions they should contact David. The Match and Win years last week were 1964, 1965, 1969 and 1980, there was no Jackpot winner and this has now risen to 1,300. The 15 consolation prizes were won by: Nona Farren, 11 Convent Rd, Carn; Pauline Breslin, Drumfries; Danica Doherty, (R), Urrismana; Dan McConalogue, Tirmaine; Anthony McDaid, Magheramore.
