Ulster MFC: Late McGeehan strike gives Derry victory

June 03, 2008
Donegal 2-12 Derry 4-10 A superbly struck goal from Derry star forward Gavin McGeehan proved the difference as the young Oak Leafers overcame the challenge of Donegal in Ballybofey to advance to the last four of the ESB Ulster MFC. McGeehan's late strike all but assured Derry of victory, after the Oak Leafers registered two somewhat fortuitous goals through Mark O'Connor and Mark McGuckin within a minute of each other to help put their side into a 2-5 to 0-6 lead at the break. Donegal hit five points in the space of nine minutes from the restart, but a goal from Niall McFeely kept the Tir Chnaill at bay, with the score at 3-6 to 0-11 after the corner-forward's strike. All hope looked to be lost for the hosts when they had their captain Daniel Curran issued a straight red card, but Caolan McFadden found the net soon after to put Donegal right up there with their opponents coming into the closing stages. However, McGeehan provided the decisive moment of this encounter when his well-executed strike found the back of the Donegal net to bury Derry's opponents and move onto the Ulster MFC semi-final.
