Derry 1-5

An inexperienced Derry team bowed out of the McKenna Cup after losing to Queen's University at Greenlough.

Fielding a dozen U21s in their line-up, the Oak Leafers trailed by 0-4 to 1-6 at half-time and were unable to make up the deficit in the second half. Points from James Kearney, Mark Lynch and Niall Toner had Brian McIver's men level on 0-3 apiece before a 1-2 salvo from Antrim's Ryan Murray left the students in a strong position at the break.

Eoin Bradley was introduced in the second half for his first Derry appearance since 2013, but two more Murray points extended the students' lead to 1-8 to 0-5.

Local man Niall Loughlin goaled with five minutes remaining to leave just three points in it, but Derry's comeback hopes were ended when they had two players black-carded in the closing stages, meaning they finished the game with 13 after using up all of their substitutes.
