"Thank f**k I'm a GAA man"

Joe Brolly has fired a broadside at Stephen Hunt after the Ipswich Town and Republic of Ireland soccer star claimed GAA players wouldn't cut it in the Premier League.

In the Sunday Independent last weekend, Hunt irked the GAA fraternity when he wrote: "As somebody who grew up in the GAA, I can tell you that, as much as I love the games, if GAA players tried to live with the level of commitment shown by a professional footballer, they wouldn't know what hit them."

Hunt was responding to Brolly's recent claim that soccer players are not role models for young people.

But in today's Irish News, Brolly reckons the former Waterford underage hurler wouldn't have lasted five minutes in last Sunday's Ulster club SFC final between Slaughtneil and Omagh St. Enda's.

"The only interesting thing about Stephen's article is that it exemplified what I was saying and further illustrated my point that these guys (professional soccer players) are self-interested," the outspoken RTE pundit said.

"I don't imagine Stephen would have lasted five minutes in the Ulster club final last Sunday. I wouldn't fancy his chances standing on the edge of the square with Patsy Bradley.

"I was saying soccer players aren't role models - they are just soccer players. Ghandi may be a role model or Pope Francis, but soccer players are only that.

"In that article, Stephen said: "I drive the 800 yards to training because I need rest'. Jesus Christ. The fella just doesn't know any better.

"That Stephen Hunt article… all it does is make you think 'Thank f**k I'm a GAA man."
