ACFL Div 2: Greenlough 0-11 Claudy 0-11 (17/05/13) - Exhilarating Senior game ends in a draw
Greenlough's Seniors returned to St Oliver Plunkett Park on Friday evening, 17th May, to take on Claudy, five weeks after their first and only home league encounter of 2013 so far; that being the opening day draw against Castledawson.
Despite the strong sun engulfing the decent sized crowd in attendance, a bitterly cold wind blew up the middle of the pitch, with Claudy availing of it in the opening half.
However, it was Greenlough who made the quicker start, with captain Niall Bradley scything through the Claudy defence and blazing wide after just 11 seconds. Following a three minute stoppage due to a bad injury to a Claudy player, it was Greenlough who had the next meaningful attack, and it was left to Fintan Kelly to swing over for the game's opening score in the fifth minute.
Fintan repeated the feat in the eighth minute and when Ryan Tohill's close range free floated over the bar Greenlough were up by three with ten gone.
Claudy threatened soon afterwards, and after firing two wides found their range with their first point in the 15th minute. They quickly followed their first with their second two minutes later, only for Connor Madden to reply immediately and score a great point against the breeze after a good run.
The North Derry men were again causing problems for the Greenlough defence, and again required two wides before finding their next score, this time a point from a free with six minutes of normal time remaining in the opening period.
The sides were level in the final minute of normal time when Claudy pointed again, and then the Mitchell's took the lead for the first time in the second of six injury time minutes, when they fired over their second pointed free of the half.
Greenlough managed to hit three wides in those six minutes of injury time as they continued to press for an equalising score; that score eventually came when Ryan Tohill pointed his second free of the day to leave the sides level at the break.
Half-Time: Greenlough 0-05 Claudy 0-05
If it was Greenlough who started the first half the strongest against the breeze, it was definitely Claudy who started the second half quickest. A point after just two minutes gave them the lead, and despite two wides in a minute, they stretched the lead to two within seven minutes of the second half throw-in.
The second score sparked Greenlough into action and when Enda Lynn fired over for his first of the day, the gap was back to the minimum. However Claudy continued to push for scores, and again with two wides preceding it they found their eighth of the day in the 43rd minute, while Greenlough's chance of an instant reply saw the ball go wide from a free at the other end.
That wide was soon forgotten about as within a five minute period the advantage swung back in favour of the homeside, first a point from Enda Lynn in the 46th, followed by Fintan Kelly's third of the day two minutes later, and finally John Og McPeake's high looping shot that dropped just over the cross bar in the 51st minute that turned a two point arrears into a single point lead.
In a game played at a frantic pace, with players counter attacking in swarms, it was inevitable there would be another score before too long, and two minutes later the sides were level when Claudy pointed again. The North Derry men then had a chance to open up a bit of daylight between the sides, but their rasping shot struck the cross bar and came back into play before being cleared.
As the lead continued to change hands Claudy pointed again with five minutes of normal time remaining, only for Enda Lynn to score from a free within a minute to level.
Then with two minutes remaining Claudy pointed yet again, and it looked as though Greenlough's unbeaten run might come to an end with time running out, but in the final minute of normal time Enda Lynn stepped up and fired over a great long range free to bring the sides level for the fifth and final time; meaning as with that opening home game against Castledawson, Greenlough had to share the league points again at St Oliver Plunkett Park, but at the same time keeping their unbeaten run in tact.

U14 League: Steelstown 5-09 Greenlough 1-05 (14/05/13) - Defeat in the City for Under 14s
Having hosted a Derry City team, Doire Trasna, at St Oliver Plunkett Park last week, it was the turn of Greenlough's Under 14s to make the return 45 mile trip up the Glenshane to visit the City on Tuesday night, 14th May, when they took on Steelstown Brian Ogs.
In the first round Greenlough met a much stronger Glenullin side who had won the Feile C, and as Steelstown were runners up in that final, the St Oliver Plunkett's boys knew they were in for a tough game.
And so it proved. Despite some good spells, a goal from Ruairi Henry, four points from Stephen Bradley and a point from Kevin Mullan, Steelstown proved too strong.
