The busiest week so far has just concluded in our 2017 season during which teams fron the club played 9 matches this week. 

 

Under-16 Football League: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-12 Caulry 2-6.

 

Our under-16s turned in a very good display at Caulry and were unlucky not to secure a win. Shamrocks moved the ball very well and were unlucky to be behind at the interval (2-1 to 0-6). A bit of untidiness in defence was severely punished by the Caulry attack who put two vital goals on the board. Some great attacking moves by Shamrocks drew fouls from the Caulry defence which were punished by Jack Gillen who put on a magnificent display of free taking in the John Heslin mode.  Zach Aherne contributed two fine points and William Adzangoa and Sean Óg Hynes also excelled.

Under-14 Girls League: Mullingar Shamrocks 5-4 St Loman's 2-8

 

Mullingar Shamrocks under-14 girls played host to St Lomans in the Harbour Field on a bitterly cold April Tuesday evening.  Our girls played into a stiff breeze in the first half but our backs battled hard and retired at the interval on level terms. The second half was full of good scores with Shamrocks securing the majority. The girls never stopped pushing forward and fully deserved their five points victory. Once again Chloe Smullen was the dominant player on the pitch and on this occasion she scored 4-2 to add to the 5-3 she netted against The Downs. Mia Gilligan chipped in with 1-1 and Abby Smith added 0-1.

Under-21 Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-14 Milltownpass 1-17.

Mullingar Shamrocks departed from the 2017 championship at the first hurdle after losing to Milltownpass in Springfield on Tuesday evening. Milltownpass dominated the first-half and with the assistance of a strong wind led at the interval by 1-11 to 0-7. Shamrocks had coped well with the conditions and the half-time deficit was by no means surmountable. Milltownpass opended the scoring but a great Tye Adamson run ended with a pass to Ross Corroon who scored a neat point.  Milltownpass added three more points and only a superb save by Dj prevented a goal; Dj was one of Shamrocks stars on the night and apart from his shot stopping expertise his kick outs were also excellent. Fintan Coyne was always dangerous and he scored a few fine first-half points (and a few more in the second half). A superb Pearse Corroon block-down began a move that ended with a neat Darren Keena point. Tye Adamson, also kicked excellently into the wind and he scored five points, three of which were superb frees, kicked off the ground just like the old time free taking specialists used to do.  

In the second-half Milltownpass added the points necessary to protect their lead; Ross Corroon (free) and Fintan Coyne exchanged points immediately after the interval and Darren Keena followed with another one of his sweet points. However, over the next eight minutes Milltownpass outscored Shamrocks 0-4 to 0-1 and essentially secured the match in this period of dominance (1-16 to 0-10). The only Shamrocks response was a fine Pearse Corroon point. However, this young Shamrocks team refused to die and points by Tye Adamson (0-2) and Pearse Corroon (0-1) as well as a good save by Dj kept the hopes alive. Unfortunately time waits for no team  and a Milltownpass point and a Tye Adamson closed the scoring. 

Milltownpass were worthy winners but Shamrocks extracted many positives from this defeat; we fielded a very young team (all but one is eligible next year), a number of players played very well (Dj, Tye, Ross and Pearse Corroon, Dylan Matthews, Dylan Ledwith, Marc Eivers and Darren Keena) , the spirit was good, some fine football was played, Tye Adamson reintroduced us to his free taking talents and, most importantly of all perhaps, it was great to see Jordan Ward make a comeback after being side-lined with injury for nine months.

Under-12 League: Victory v The Downs

It was a hands-deep-in-the-pockets heavy winter jackets type of evening in Springfield on Wednesday evening as our Under-12 footballers began their season's campaign. We had a panel of twenty-seven togged out and eager for action against The Downs. The lads played really good football on the night and from the skill levels, decision making and combination play on display it was clear that this is a group of players who have been well coached in the skills of the game. All players got some game time on the night; these were the player who began the game: Matthew Donoghue; Dylan Carey, Killian Kelly, Peter Finch; Tadgh Sheridan, Donnacha Maguire, Karl Mulherne; Matthew Ryan and Conor Heffernan; John Ryan, Ryan Kelly, Matthew Shaw; Alex Sheerin, Eoin Doran, Gavin Pierce; 

ACL Div.5: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-13 Rosemount 0-11 

Mullingar Shamrocks had a welcome and deserved victory over Rosemount in this ACL Div.5 match played in Springfield on Friday evening. This was a good game of football between two evenly matched teams played at a decent pace with some fine displays of skill evident from players on both sides. From the Shamrocks perspective, the improvement was noticeable as players become more familiar with the football as they commit to their training. The sides were level at half-time with Rosmount probably the more dominant but they failed to transfer this to the score board. David Gavin opened the scoring for Shamrocks, Pearse Corroon added two from frees, Stephen Hassett added another before Ross Corroon hit a great long range effort. Pearse Corroon scored the sixth point with a neat left footed finish. 

Roles were reversed in the second half with Shamrocks the more dominant. Rosemount kicked the opening point but this was quickly neutralised with a David Gavin effort; Kenneth O'Reilly, Ross and Pearse pointed without any response from Rosemount to send Shamrocks into a 0-10 to 0-7 lead. Rosemont pointed but Conor Twomey (making a comeback to active service) responded in similar manner (0-11 to 0-8). Rosemount added two; Kenneth O' Reilly scored with a great effort from close to the sideline but Rosemount were good for one more point (0-12 to 0-11) and with their final attack were wide from a good scoring position. Shamrocks gained and retained possession and with their final attack Conor Bracken pointed, this time from even closer to the sideline, before referee Alan Coyne ended the evening's sport.

(6 & 7 & 8 ) Féile na nÓg

Our under-14 boys departed the competition when they were well beaten by a powerful Coralstown-Kinnegad team. It was the second defat to the Kinnegad outfit in a week as we played them earlier in the week in the County Under-14 League. Our senior ladies also shipped a heavy defeat against St Loman's in the Division 1 Ladies Football League. 

 (9) ACL. Div.3: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-6 Ballinagore 2-9

With players absent for a variety of reasons including injury and the need to rest some players for Sunday's crucial  Div.1 match, an understrength Mullingar Shamrocks were comprehensively beaten by Ballinagore on Saturday evening. Tommy McDaniel inflicted the damage on Shamrocks as he produced the kind of performance one would expect from a senior inter-county player in the free and easy environment of a Division 3 League match. He scored 2-7 on the night and was well supported by centre-forward Brandon Carey.  McDaniel's opening goal came from a penalty; the foul earned a black card for Daragh White whose match came to a premature end after 10 minutes. Ballinagore led by 2-4 to 0-2 at the interval. The second half was more evenly contested as Ballinagore outscored Shamrocks by a single point (0-5 to 0-4). If McDaniel excelled in scoring for Ballinagore so too did Ross Corroon for Shamrocks as he kicked four excellent points on the night. Our other scores came from Kenneth O'Reilly and Paddy Joyce. Killian White, David Coyne, Paddy Joyce, Eamonn Breslin, Mark McLoughlin, Neil Hannigan and Anthony Clinton also played very well on the night.

(10) ACL Div.1: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-8 Coralstown-Kinnegad 0-8

After trailing by 0-5 to 0-2 at the interval to wind assisted Coralstown-Kinnegad, Shamrocks outmanoeuvred their heavy defensive system and outscored the home team during the second half to land their first victory of the 2017 campaign. David Gavin scored the all-important goal to secure the vital points and Dylan McDermott had the final score, a huge long-range effort. David Gavin, Tye Adamson and Micheál Curley excelled throughout in a game that marked the return of Kieran Gavin to competitive fare after his Central and South American expedition and Alan Cashman after a long absence through injury.

No luck for our quiz team in Streamstown as the quartet of David Gavin, Willie Geraghty, Paul Doolin and Tom Hunt finished second (again!) the reigning county champions, St Joseph's Streamstown who scored 65 points to Shamrocks 59. We wish the boys from Streamstown the best of luck in the All-Ireland final in Belfast.

The Mullingar Shamrocks club would like to express sincere sympathy to Gerrie Fagan (nee Leslie) and to her sisters Therese, Antoinette and Orla on the death of their sister Peigi (Margaret) O'Rourke in Dublin during the week.
