St. Loman's, Mullingar 1-13
A late Ciaran Kilmurray goal put the seal on St. Loman's third Flanagan Cup triumph in four seasons at the expense of Tyrrellspass in front of a crowd of almost 6,000 at TEG Cusack Park.
Eager to avenge their 2013 final loss, Tyrrellspass led by 0-7 to 0-6 at the break, but Luke Dempsey's men finished the stronger to justify their favourtism and be crowned Westmeath kingpins for a sixth time. It was a frustrating afternoon for Tyrrellspass captain and wing back Brian Slevin who rattled the crossbar in the 18th minute before being red-carded in the closing stages.
Westmeath skipper Ger Egan's fifth point from a free was all that separated the teams at the end of the opening half. After Loman's had levelled on the restart, David Glennon edged Tyrrellspass back into a 0-8 to 0-7 lead. But then the outstanding Shane Dempsey - who shot 0-7 from play - took centre stage with a quick brace of points.
With the Mullingar men holding on to a slender 0-11 to 0-10 lead in the 59th minute, the 'Tidy Town' had strong claims for a 'point' by veteran sub Philip Sheridan turned down.
Following that let-off, Loman's sub Kilmurray poked home the only goal after Dempsey's initial shot had been blocked. Paul Sharry and Dempsey tagged on points in injury-time as the Lakepoint Park outfit retained their crown.
