Rathkenny rattle Ratoath with late, late show
April 24, 2005
A goal two minutes into injury time by Rathkenny's Peadar Farrelly won this exciting intermediate clash between Rathkenny and last year's Leinster junior champions Ratoath before a large crowd at Seneschalstown last Saturday evening.
There was never more than a kick of a ball between the sides. By the 25th minute, Rathkenny were level at 0-06 apiece through points from Richie Timmons (3 frees), Donal Curtis, Brian Meade and Owen Elliott. Then came Rathkenny's first goal. Richie Timmons raced onto a high ball to flick over the on-rushing Ratoath keeper. Timmons added another point on the stroke of half time to leave it 1-07 to 0-07 in favour of Rathkenny.
Ratoath opened the second half with a point after two minutes before Rathkenny added another free from Timmons on 39 minutes. This proved to be Rathkenny's last score until deep into injury time. The second half belonged to Ratoath who clawed their way back in front with five unanswered points, one of which could have ended in the net but for a great save by Rathkenny custodian John Martin.
Rathkenny to their credit defended very well and restricted Ratoath to long range efforts while at the other end had four efforts of their own that just shaded the wrong side of the post. With time running out and Ratoath holding a two point lead it fell to Peadar Farrelly to latch onto a high ball and beat the keeper with a deft punch to give Rathkenny the win.
Ratoath were deflated at the end, but Rathkenny's never say die spirit which has left them unbeaten this year in League and Championship ensured the thrilling victory.
Best for Rathkenny were Michael Reid, Donal Curtis, John Donegan and Richie Timmons.
