St Ultans 1-15
Kilmainhamwood 0-14
Kilmainhamwood missed a chance to scrape their way out of relegation after they lost a tough contest against St Ultans in Sean Newman park on Wednesday evening.
The Wood who were missing some of their first team players, were terribly flat footed in the opening 10 minutes as the Ultans raced into a 1-4 to zero lead and looked as if they were going to cruise to a comfortable victory. However the Wood didn't give up easy and points from Michael Shankey, David Russell and Stephen Kiernan got the Wood back into the game. However playing against a strong breeze in the first half it was never going to be easy. Before half time the Ultans lead by 1-9 to 0-4 and Kilmainhamwood squandered two good goal chances. The game looked as it might get even more bleak for the north Meath men when St Ultans we're awarded a penalty on the stroke of half time. Damian Russell however made a fantastic stop as he dived down low to palm the ball by the post.
The Wood started the second half strong as Paddy Carolan kicked some fine scores and also linked well with Micheal Shankey who was on fine scoring form. The Ultans however with their eight point halftime advantage were happy to keep the scoreboard thinking over and generally held a 6 point advantage. With 12 minutes to go the Wood were given a lifeline as the Ultans were reduced to 14 after a second bookable offence.
More scores from Alan Carolan and Paddy Carolan saw the lead shrink to just four points between the sides with five minutes to play. However Kilmainhamwood continued to blast balls into the full forward line despite the fact St Ultans had clearly packed their defence with men at the back and the gap was not closed any further.
In the end the St Ultans held on. Best for Kilmainhamwood were Damian Russell in goals, Padraig Barber in defence and Michael Shankey in attack.
