IFC: Clanns pip Ultan's in epic

May 15, 2011

St Ultan's Kieran Lynch
Clann na nGael 3-11
St. Ultans 2-11

This high scoring encounter was played in windy conditions in Trim on Sunday. Strange to say that both teams played far better against the wind Clann in the first half and the Ultans in the second half.

Clann na Gael scored a goal with one minute gone on the clock. They then added a point and another goal after a goal mouth scramble. The goals came from Gary Hanley and Caoimhin O Griofa. Cian Rennicks got Ultans on the scoreboard with an excellent point from play. Full Back Kieran Lynch blocked a ball at midfield and then he finished the move to leave Ultans with 2 points but 5 in arrears. In the following period Ultans then kicked 6 wides in a row with the strong wind. Clann na Gael replied at scored 2 points in a row 1 a free from an in form Shane McAnarney. Clann Na Gael maintained a gap of six points at all times. Graham Geraghty was rolling back the years with an effective display. At the other end of the field Cian Rennicks was proving a handful with four frees and a point from play that could have possibly been a goal. Half time score was St ultans 0-7 Clann Na Gael 2-7

In the second half St Ultans came out with more energy than what had been displayed in the 1st half. Ciaran Rodgers opened the scoring for Ultans with a point and he injured himself in the process. McAnarney pointed for Clann to leave six in it. Ciaran Rodgers then went off the pitch injured and was replaced by Robert Daly who went into goals and Alan Rodgers went into full forward. He succeeded in creating panic in the Clann na Gael defence as he caught a long ball in and laid it off to Shane Mulroe who's shot was adjudged to have been blocked by a Clann na Gael foot and referee Brendan Darby signalled for a penalty. Cian Rennicks scored it to leave three in the game.

Then the crucial score in the game came straight after the penalty when a Damien Tuite effort from an almost impossible angle on the end line found its way to the St Ultans net and this seemed to give Clan a bit of breathing space as six points separated the sides again. To their credit Ultan's never gave in. Daryl McLoughlin, Rennicks and Paul Murray added further points and they were in with a shout. With about 7-8 minutes to go Ultans got a lifeline when a Clann na nGael free got caught in the wind and ended up in the arms of Cian Rennicks who scored a goal. That left two points in it with all to play for.

However even with all the possession Ultans could not muster up the scores to gain a draw.

Best for St Ultans were Kieran Lynch, Cian Rennicks,Darren Costello.
