Tooreen Hurling club was the venue as the Mayo GAA U14 Feile na nGael Hurling competition took place for the 2017 season.
Over 90 young hurlers from the four competing clubs took part in the event which drew a large crowd to the East Mayo village. In the opening semi final played in the neighbouring Ballyhaunis GAA Grounds, Westport overcame Castlebar with ease to gain entry to the showpiece final. In Tooreen, the second semi final was contested by neighbours Caiseal Gaels and Tooreen with Caiseal Gaels eventually coming out on top on a 3-4 to 3-2 scoreline in an exciting battle.
The 'B' final between Tooreen and Castlebar was the first final of the day as the hosts ran out winners on a 4-4 to 2-1 scoreline. After this game Jimmy Connor presented the Mayo GAA Feile na nGael Shield to Mark Mulkeen who was captain of the successful Tooreen U14 side.
The 'A' final followed close after as defending champions Westport turned on the style to land the title again in convincing fashion. After this game, Ita Freeman - mother of Adrian Freeman RIP - presented the Adrian Freeman Memorial Cup for U14 Feile na nGael champions to Kevin Gannon - captain of the successful Westport side.
Westport now go forward to represent Mayo in Division3 of National Feile na nGael in June where they will be hosted by Danesfort of Kilkenny. Runners-up Caiseal Gaels also qualified for the Nationals where they will be hosted by Emeralds of Urlingford in Kilkenny. Tooreen also qualify in third place in Mayo as they will be hosted in Division9 by Mount Leinster Rangers of Carlow.
