St. Vincent's (Dublin) 3-11
Portlaoise (Laois) 0-10
Shane Carthy grabbed 2-2 as All-Ireland champions St. Vincent's enjoyed a surprisingly comfortable quarter-final victory over Portlaoise at O'Moore Park.
Both of the half forward's goals came in the third quarter as the Marino men cut loose after leading by just a point at the interval. The Dublin kingpins, who had just three points to spare over Portlaoise in last year's Leinster final, now progress to a semi-final meeting with 2012 All-Ireland finalists Garrycastle at Parnell Park on November 23.
The winners were never headed after early points from Tomas Quinn and Diarmuid Connolly and a Quinn goal eased them into a 1-2 to 0-0 lead after just four minutes. The hard-working Paul Cahillane got two points back for 'The Town' before Ruairi Treanor made it 1-3 to 0-2 in the winners' favour after 20 minutes.
But Portlaoise then enjoyed their best spell which yielded scores from Zach Tuohy, Cahillane, Craig Rogers and Brian 'Bruno' McCormack to trail by the minimum, 0-6 to 1-4, at half-time.
However, St. Vincent's turned the screw on the restart when Carthy raised his first green flag, while Quinn and Carthy tagged on points. Rogers replied with the home side's first point of the half from a free, but it was all over bar the shouting when Carthy netted his second in the 43rd minute
Portlaoise had Kieran Lillis black-carded with 10 minutes remaining and were outscored 0-3 to 0-1 thereafter, with Vins substitute Cormac Diamond put his hand up for selection the next day with two late points.
