Shields focused on championship

Michael Shields has consigned Cork's historic Allianz League three-in-a-row to the past.

Speaking after receiving the 96/C103 Cork GAA Sports Star of the Month award for April in the Rochestown Park Hotel recently, the St. Finbarr's clubman says Cork's entire focus in now on the championship and their Munster semi-final against either Kerry or Tipperary on June 10.

"It's been a fantastic achievement to complete three Division 1 National Football League titles, the first for Cork to land a three-in-a-row. That's complete, now we turn our attention to the Munster SFC, it's all about the next game, Kerry or Tipp and our efforts are concentrating on that," he is quoted as saying in The Corkman.

The full back also predicted that the recently amended 'square ball' rule would make life more difficult for goalkeepers and defenders.

"It will place the defence under pressure, but it is all about communication between the 'keeper and the defence to solve," he added.
