Corn Ui Mhuiri roundup
January 28, 2010
De La Salle, Macroom will face Dingle CBS, while holders Colaiste na Sceilge will lock horns with St. Brendan's, Killarney in the semi-finals of the Corn Ui Mhuiri following yesterday's quarter-final action.
Fielding eight of last year's Hogan Cup winning side, Jack O'Connor's Colaiste na Sceilge survived a surprisingly stern test from Abbey CBS, Tipperary, winning by 1-10 to 1-4. With Kerry minor Max Thiemann dominant at midfield, the South Kerry outfit led by 0-6 to 0-0 at the break.
Ian Galvin's 42nd minute goal eased the holders into a 1-8 to 0-2 lead, but Abbey CBS refused to accept defeat and a Donagh Leahy goal in the 47th minute ensured a nervous finish to the game for na Sceilge.
The All-Ireland champions will need to improve for their all-Kerry semi-final against St. Brendan's who hammered St. Flannan's by 3-10 to 0-3. A Padraig Lucey goal had the Killarney side ahead by 1-4 to 0-2 at the break, and further majors from Tom Moriarty and Shaun Keane made it easy in the end.
In Rathmore, late points from Tony Dineen and Stephen Down steered De La Salle, Macroom to a 0-9 to 0-7 victory over Tralee CBS. The sides were level on four occasions in the second half before Dineen edged the Cork outfit in front and wing forward Down hit the insurance point in injury-time.
Macroom can now look forward to a semi-final meeting with Dingle CBS who, despite failing to score for 34 minutes, overcame St. Colman's, Fermoy by 0-10 to 0-3 in their quarter-final clash at Knocknagree.
The West Kerry team also had centre forward Sean Dinny O Conchuir sent off for a second yellow card offence midway through the second half, but they still proved too good for their Cork opponents.
Both semi-finals will be played on the weekend of February 13/14.
