Waterford Crystal Cup: Good day for students
January 25, 2010
UCC and UL continued their preparations for the Fitzgibbon Cup with wins over Limerick and LIT respectively in yesterday's Waterford Crystal Cup action.
There was a large media presence in Kilmallock to see how embattled Limerick manager Justin McCarthy's makeshift side would fare out against a talented UCC bunch. But despite goals in either half from Graeme Mulcahy and substitute Alan O'Connor, the Shannonsiders succumbed to a 2-9 to 0-19 defeat.
UCC had three points on the board before Thomas O'Brien opened the home side's account in the eighth minute. The students led 0-7 to 0-4 when Mulcahy beat Anthony Nash to give Limerick the lead. But it proved short-lived as UCC battled back to take a 0-11 to 1-5 advantage into the break.
UL needed extra-time to get the better of Limerick city rivals LIT by 3-22 to 2-18 at the LIT grounds. A spectacular goal by Galway's Joe Canning with the last puck of normal-time forced an additional 20 minutes, during which UL pulled clear for a 3-22 to 2-18 victory.
A Michael Gleeson goal had the winners 3-16 to 2-17 ahead by the end of the first period, and two points by Offaly's Brian Carroll in the second period sealed the deal.
